Consumers across India will find that the retail prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) have remained unchanged on August 9. This stability comes despite ongoing concerns regarding fuel pricing and global market volatility.
However, commercial LPG cylinders, primarily used by hotels, restaurants, and other establishments, saw a significant price reduction. Over the weekend, the rate for a 19-kg commercial cylinder was cut by ₹192.
Under-recoveries and Market Challenges
While retail rates hold steady, oil marketing companies continue to report substantial under-recoveries on domestic LPG cylinders. According to Indian Oil Corporation Chairman AS Sahney, companies are still losing ₹503 on every 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder sold, as the current retail price falls below the actual cost of supply.
The issue of fuel pricing is further complicated by the uncertain geopolitical situation, particularly involving the United States and Iran. Reports of ongoing talks, conflicting statements, and potential control over the Strait of Hormuz by Tehran contribute to market instability and impact global energy prices.
India's Diversification Strategy and Consumption Trends
In response to supply disruptions and to reduce its heavy reliance on Middle Eastern imports, India plans to source up to a quarter of its LPG imports from the United States by 2027. This move aims to secure a more diversified supply chain and support broader trade deals with Washington. India, the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer, historically sourced about 90% of its 21.85 million metric tonnes of LPG imports from the Middle East in 2025.
Government data indicates that imports account for approximately 66% of the country's total LPG consumption. Earlier this year, the government redirected petrochemical feedstocks to household LPG consumption following supply disruptions.
Meanwhile, India has seen a decline in LPG sales, falling 17.4% to 2.37 million tonnes. Industry officials attribute this drop primarily to a shift towards piped natural gas (PNG) in the wake of the West Asia crisis. Although restrictions on LPG usage by hotels and restaurants were lifted last month, consumption in July remained lower than the previous year, keeping the outlook for LPG, CNG, and PNG prices under close scrutiny.
