India's Evolving Energy Sourcing Strategy

Concerns over the stability of LPG, CNG, and PNG prices persist amidst uncertainties in global supply chains. India is actively working to diversify its energy sources, aiming to reduce dependence on imported cooking gas and secure supplies from alternative international partners. The government also seeks to bolster domestic LPG availability and expand the reach of piped natural gas connections across the nation.

Diversifying LPG and LNG Imports

Maritime intelligence firm Kpler reports a significant shift in India's LPG and LNG import patterns. In August, India imported approximately 0.62 million tonnes of LPG from the United States, following 0.89 million tonnes in July. These volumes collectively accounted for over 73 percent of India’s total LPG imports during the period. This marks a sharp pivot from traditional West Asian suppliers, as imports from the Gulf have notably decreased since the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route, following regional conflicts.

Specifically, UAE LPG imports fell to around 140,000 tonnes in August, with Qatar supplying roughly 60,000 tonnes. Saudi Arabia provided no LPG to India in July or August. A similar trend is visible in LNG, where Qatar, historically India's largest source, supplied zero tonnes in April, while US supplies rose to about 0.75 million tonnes in August from 0.72 million tonnes in July.

Government Initiatives for Domestic Gas

To curb subsidy expenditures and promote cleaner energy, the Indian government approved an incentive scheme for city gas distributors. Starting September 1, 2026, this scheme aims to boost domestic PNG connections. States and Union Territories have been directed to offer district-level administrative support to expedite the transition from LPG cylinders to piped gas. Furthermore, the deadline for LPG e-KYC, crucial for subsidy verification, was extended to August 31.

Crude Oil Sourcing Update

While LPG and LNG sourcing has diversified, Russia remains India's largest crude oil supplier, providing nearly 2 million barrels per day in August. The UAE followed with 0.61 million tonnes, maintaining comparatively resilient crude supplies due to its pipeline infrastructure to Fujairah and offshore logistics that can operate outside the Strait of Hormuz. Venezuela has also emerged as an increasingly important part of India’s supply diversification, contributing 383,000 barrels per day in August, though further increases face limitations due to crude characteristics and refinery configurations.

Overall, India's energy landscape is undergoing a strategic transformation, with a clear focus on securing diverse supplies and promoting domestic gas adoption to mitigate pricing uncertainties.
