Reports indicate that rates for all three essential fuels have not changed for over a month. However, renewed military actions involving the United States and Iran have heightened fears of potential disruptions to global energy supply chains, impacting India's energy security outlook.
Geopolitical Impact on Fuel Supply
The recent increase in tensions between Washington and Tehran has cast a shadow over international shipping routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which are critical for energy transit. Vessel crossings in these regions have remained low amid worsening regional security. This situation echoes the severe LPG shortages experienced earlier in 2026, which were directly attributed to the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
India, being the world's third-largest oil importer and consumer, relies heavily on these routes. In 2025, approximately 90 percent of its 21.85 million metric tonnes of LPG imports originated from the Middle East, with imports accounting for around 66 percent of the nation's total LPG consumption.
India's Diversification Strategy
In response to these vulnerabilities and to mitigate future supply risks, India is actively pursuing a strategy to diversify its LPG sourcing. The country plans to secure up to a quarter of its liquefied petroleum gas imports from the United States by 2027. This strategic shift aims to significantly reduce India's dependence on Middle Eastern suppliers and enhance the resilience of its energy supply chain.
This diversification initiative is also seen as a move that could bolster New Delhi's efforts to forge a comprehensive trade deal with Washington, strengthening economic ties between the two nations.
