LinkedIn India Chief: AI Reshaping CEO Leadership & Decision-Making

Artificial intelligence has transcended its role as a mere back-office tool, becoming a central boardroom fixture that is fundamentally altering how India's CEOs lead. According to Kumaresh Pattabiraman, India Country Manager and VP, LSS Product at LinkedIn, top executives are now rethinking decision-making, organizational design, and the essential skills required for effective leadership in the AI era.

AI: A Boardroom Imperative for Indian CEOs

LinkedIn's latest research highlights that 84% of India's C-suite leaders integrate AI inputs into their decision-making processes. Despite this widespread adoption, nearly four out of five executives admit to feeling pressured to move faster with AI than they can effectively assess its true impact. This tension is redefining leadership, as traditional experience and established playbooks prove insufficient against rapidly evolving technology.

Pattabiraman emphasizes, "The pressure on leaders today is that they have to move before every answer is clear. It is no longer enough to rely only on experience or wait for a perfect playbook. Leaders need to keep updating how they think, what they understand, and the questions they ask." AI is moving beyond simple productivity enhancements, enabling leaders to interpret signals, test scenarios, and question assumptions at unprecedented speeds.

Human Judgment Remains Paramount

While AI can provide insights and process data with unmatched efficiency, Pattabiraman cautions that technology informs decisions but cannot replace leadership itself. The ultimate responsibility for high-stakes choices still rests with the human leader, especially when complete information isn't available.

"AI can tell you what the data suggests, but only you can tell which trade-off is right for your organisation, how a decision will affect trust, or what kind of company you want to build. That's where human judgment matters the most," he states. LinkedIn identifies five critical "Cs" that define leadership in the AI era: creativity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and communication. These skills are crucial for challenging assumptions, acting without perfect certainty, redesigning work, grounding transformation in people, and building trust.

From Org Charts to Work Charts: Redesigning Operations

Successful AI transformation, accordingabiraman, is less about technology deployment and more about fundamentally redesigning how work is accomplished. "AI adoption sits at the intersection of technology, people and leadership," he explains. This necessitates a re-evaluation of long-standing organizational structures.

Leaders should shift their focus from traditional "org charts," which define reporting lines, to "work charts" that map where capabilities exist, identify decision bottlenecks, and reveal opportunities to redesign work. "AI exposes the mismatch between how companies are organised and how value actually gets created," Pattabiraman notes. Organizations that prioritize rethinking work itself, bringing the right leaders, skills, and technology around value-creating tasks, will gain a competitive edge.

The Critical CTO-CHRO Partnership

AI's influence also extends to how leadership teams collaborate. LinkedIn's research indicates that 44% of Indian C-suite leaders now view the partnership between the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) as the most vital relationship for cultivating an AI-enabled workforce.

Pattabiraman highlights the synergy required: "If technology moves faster than workforce readiness, adoption stalls. If skills work is built without a clear view of the technology roadmap, it becomes too generic to change the business." Effective CTO-CHRO collaboration ensures a shared understanding of evolving work, necessary skills, and how AI truly enhances human performance.
