Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla has underscored the critical need for businesses to maintain investment and pursue growth, even in the face of ongoing geopolitical uncertainties and increasing capital demands. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, Birla asserted that companies cannot afford to halt expansion, as continuous growth is fundamental for long-term survival and competitiveness.
The Imperative for Sustained Business Growth
Birla highlighted that the Aditya Birla Group itself has continued to invest in both its established operations and new ventures, despite an increasingly unpredictable global environment. He emphasized the inherent challenge of judiciously allocating capital across various competing priorities. “You can't stop growing... for me capital allocation has been a challenge because you have a whole lot of new demands on your capital which we know about but at the same time... you keep growing; you either grow or you go down,” Birla stated, reinforcing his core message.
Navigating Geopolitical Risks
The Chairman also pointed to geopolitical developments as a significant hurdle for multinational corporations. As businesses become more interconnected globally, events in one region can have unforeseen consequences for operations elsewhere. Birla noted that for a global organization like his, any major international event reported in the news is likely to impact some part of their business worldwide, often in ways that are not immediately apparent.
Empowering Employees and Fostering Collaboration
Against this complex backdrop, Birla stressed the importance of employee collaboration and a collective understanding of how global developments influence business. He urged companies to foster environments where teams learn from each other and recognize the links between seemingly unrelated events. Equally important, he added, is maintaining employee motivation and engagement to navigate uncertainty and sustain organizational performance. “At the end of the day, it's people who make the difference and I think keeping them going and keeping them enthused and energetic is an equally important task,” he remarked.
Focus on Cost Competitiveness and Scale in Manufacturing
For the group's manufacturing businesses, Birla highlighted cost competitiveness and economies of scale as paramount. The objective, he explained, is to position their manufacturing operations among the world's most cost-efficient producers, enabling them to compete effectively in international markets. “I think it's about building the inherent strength of the business. So, for example, in all our manufacturing businesses, we'd be in the bottom decile of the cost curve globally. So, amongst the 10% lowest cost producers, it's about scale,” Birla concluded. His remarks encapsulate the group's strategy of balancing continuous investment with operational efficiency, employee engagement, and overall resilience amidst global challenges.
