Kotak Mahindra Bank Proposes Two Internal Candidates for CEO Succession

· · 2 min read

Kotak Mahindra Bank has recommended Executive Directors Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap to the Reserve Bank of India as potential successors to CEO Ashok Vaswani. Vaswani's term concludes on December 31, 2026, and he will not seek reappointment.

Kotak Mahindra Bank has formally proposed two internal candidates to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the crucial role of Chief Executive Officer. The recommendations come as current CEO Ashok Vaswani is set to conclude his term on December 31, 2026, having indicated he will not seek reappointment.

The Proposed Candidates

  • Anup Saha: An Executive Director at Kotak Mahindra Bank, Saha joined the institution in January and currently oversees its retail banking business. Prior to his tenure at Kotak, he led the non-bank lender Bajaj Finance.
  • Paritosh Kashyap: Also an Executive Director, Kashyap is a long-standing veteran within Kotak Mahindra Bank, heading the bank’s wholesale banking division.

These recommendations represent the initial phase in the succession planning for one of India's prominent private-sector lenders. Banking regulations mandate that financial institutions must propose at least two individuals for the CEO position to the RBI.

RBI's Role in Succession

The Reserve Bank of India holds the authority to either approve one of the nominated candidates or, if it deems the proposals unsuitable, request the bank to consider and put forward additional names. This regulatory oversight ensures a rigorous selection process for leadership roles in the banking sector.

Ashok Vaswani, a former executive at Barclays and Citigroup, assumed the CEO position on January 1, 2024, succeeding founder Uday Kotak, who had helmed the bank for over two decades. Under Vaswani's leadership, Kotak Mahindra Bank articulated ambitions to become India’s third-largest private lender based on after-tax profit. The incoming CEO will be tasked with building upon this strategic growth momentum. The Kotak family maintains a significant stake in the bank, holding 26% of its shares.
