Mandatory LPG Connection Surrender for PNG Users
Effective June 1, households with active Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections are now required to terminate and surrender their existing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder connections within 30 days of PNG installation. This directive from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas aims to phase out dual-fuel systems in areas with gas grids. Oil marketing companies (OMCs) like Indane, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas are introducing a "Connection Transfer Voucher" system, allowing urban residents to surrender cylinders while retaining the option to restore LPG service if they move to an area without PNG. Additionally, OMCs will conduct their regular monthly price revisions for 14.2-kg domestic and 19-kg commercial gas cylinders on June 1, affecting immediate household expenses.
New UPI Safeguard: Mandatory Real-Name Previews
To combat identity spoofing and erroneous transfers, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is implementing a new transaction safeguard across all mobile payment applications, including Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. From June 1, when initiating any peer-to-peer or peer-to-merchant fund transfer, the app will display the recipient's officially verified legal name – as registered with their bank – before the user enters their UPI PIN. This instant confirmation screen serves as a crucial check against digital fraud, ensuring users verify the recipient before finalizing transactions.
Banking Fees and PAN Requirements Updated
Multiple commercial banking networks are adjusting their service fee structures on June 1, particularly for non-home branch services and cash management. Free monthly ATM transaction thresholds (typically 3 to 5) will be strictly enforced, with fees for withdrawals, mini-statements, and balance inquiries increasing once the limit is exhausted. While the mandatory Permanent Account Number (PAN) rule for physical cash deposits up to Rs 50,000 has been slightly eased, a valid PAN remains strictly required for high-value family gifts and registered property transactions exceeding Rs 20 lakh.
Advance Tax Deadline and Enhanced Income Tax Benefits
For salaried professionals and individual taxpayers, June 1 opens critical compliance windows under the newly implemented Income Tax Act 2025 and Income Tax Rules 2026 frameworks. Earners with an estimated net tax liability exceeding Rs 10,000 for the financial year must pay 15% of their total tax liability by the June 15 deadline to avoid a 1% monthly interest penalty. Families filing under the old tax regime will also see enhanced relief. The Children Education Allowance tax exemption increases significantly to Rs 3,000 per month per child, and the hostel allowance exemption rises to Rs 9,000 per month. Major corporate hubs, including Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad, now qualify for the higher 50% House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption bracket.
Chennai Train Travel Timetable Overhauls
Daily commuters utilizing public rail networks, particularly in Chennai, will experience substantial operational schedule changes from June 1. Regional zones like Southern Railway have completely overhauled timetables for heavily utilized commuter paths, adjusting the scheduled departures of over 200 trains on Chennai’s suburban rail network. The new timetable takes effect from June 1, 2026, on the Chennai Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpattu rail corridor. Passengers are advised to verify updated schedules on local station display boards or digital transit applications to avoid missing connections.
