Kerala High Court Designates P. B. Menon Senior Advocate Ahead of 100th Birthday

· · 2 min read

Veteran lawyer P. B. Menon has been designated as a Senior Advocate by the Kerala High Court, just days before his 100th birthday. Menon holds the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a practicing lawyer, spanning over 76 years.

The Kerala High Court has conferred the prestigious Senior Advocate designation upon veteran lawyer P. Balasubramanian Menon, a significant honor bestowed just before his 100th birthday on October 15. This recognition highlights a remarkable legal career that began in 1950 and continues to this day.

A Distinguished Career Spanning Decades

P. B. Menon commenced his legal journey in 1950 at the Madras High Court, where he trained under the esteemed Kuttikrishnan Menon, who later served as Advocate General. After approximately two years in Madras, he returned to Palakkad, Kerala, to practice under criminal lawyer K. S. Ramakrishna Iyer.

Initially focusing on criminal cases, Menon's professional path evolved. An encounter with a judge in Kochi prompted him to specialize in civil law, an area that would become his primary focus for the majority of his extensive career.

Guinness World Record Holder

Menon's exceptional longevity in the legal profession has garnered international acclaim. In 2023, he was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-serving practicing lawyer, having completed 73 years and 60 days in the profession. He continues to hold this record, adding to his illustrious legacy.

Significance of the Designation

The designation as a Senior Advocate is particularly noteworthy because Menon's practice has predominantly been rooted in the district courts, rather than the High Court itself. This marks a potentially historic instance of the Kerala High Court bestowing this honor upon a lawyer primarily practicing in mofussil courts, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of legal professionals at the grassroots level.

The decision, approved following an initiative by Kerala High Court Chief Justice Soumen Sen, celebrates Menon's extraordinary professional journey and his unwavering commitment to the legal system, a career that began even before India became a republic.
