A recent incident in Chennai saw Kayalvizhi Alagiri, granddaughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and daughter of ex-Union Minister M K Alagiri, caught on security camera footage physically assaulting a State Bank of India (SBI) branch manager. The altercation, which occurred on July 20 at the SBI NRI branch in the Adyar area, stemmed from a heated argument over a malfunctioning elevator.
Escalation to Physical Altercation
The dispute began when Harshin Singh, the manager of the SBI branch, reported a broken elevator to the property maintenance staff of the commercial building, which is owned by Kayalvizhi. After repeated attempts to resolve the issue proved futile, Singh escalated his grievance directly to Kayalvizhi Alagiri.
Kayalvizhi subsequently visited the branch office to address the matter. Initial reports indicate a verbal exchange quickly turned hostile. Security camera footage from inside Singh's office reportedly shows Alagiri mocking the manager's posture and body language before striking him across the face. A man accompanying her was seen attempting to pacify her moments before the physical assault.
Police Action Initiated
Following the assault, Manager Harshin Singh immediately alerted senior bank management and provided the CCTV footage as evidence. Namachivayam, the Chief Manager of the SBI NRI branch, then lodged an official police complaint detailing that Kayalvizhi Alagiri had abused, threatened, and physically assaulted Singh.
Based on the formal complaint and the compelling visual evidence from the security cameras, the Adyar police have registered a case against Kayalvizhi Alagiri. She faces charges of physical assault and criminal intimidation, with an investigation into the matter currently underway.
