Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has announced a significant financial contribution of ₹1 crore to the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) new nationwide legal aid initiative. This program is designed to support students and other individuals facing legal repercussions for their participation in recent protests concerning alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
CJP's Legal Aid Framework
The CJP plans to launch a dedicated website to serve as a central hub for this initiative. This platform will meticulously document First Information Reports (FIRs) and other legal proceedings against protesters across India. Crucially, it will also allow lawyers willing to offer pro bono or paid legal assistance to register, facilitating connections with those in need of representation.
"Wherever peaceful protests have taken place in India, and students or protesters have been targeted, we have decided to create a mechanism to track the legal cases lodged by governments so that our lawyers can provide legal aid," Sibal stated at a press conference in New Delhi.
Sibal further appealed to legal professionals nationwide to join the effort, emphasizing the importance of collective action to defend individuals affected by what he described as the "misuse of law."
Concerns Over Post-Protest Action
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das highlighted the organization's foresight regarding potential legal action against protesters, even before officially concluding their 37-day protest movement on July 25. Das noted that CJP had consulted Sibal on legal safeguards, anticipating a pattern of government targeting once demonstrations ceased.
Despite assurances from the Central government that peaceful demonstrators would not face punitive measures, CJP reports indicate that students have been detained or booked in various states, including Bihar and West Bengal. The party has reiterated its demands for the immediate withdrawal of all FIRs against protesters, the release of detained students, and a formal written commitment from the government ensuring legal protection.
Public Support and Expansion
Beyond Sibal's substantial donation, the CJP's legal aid fund will be open to public contributions via the upcoming website. Sibal underscored that even modest donations would be vital in sustaining legal assistance for students involved in cases across different states. The organization has already begun establishing a network with lawyers in multiple regions, with plans for a comprehensive nationwide expansion of its legal support services.
