As of July 19, prices for domestic 14.2 kg LPG cylinders, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in India’s major cities have shown stability for over a month. This consistency stands in contrast to the volatile international oil market, where crude prices have seen a four-day consecutive rise.
Global Oil Prices Surge Amid Middle East Tensions
The global oil market is experiencing significant upward pressure following a fresh wave of US strikes on Iranian military installations. These actions have heightened fears of a wider conflict and potential supply disruptions in the crucial Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy shipments.
Brent crude futures climbed by 0.4% to $85.28 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate futures rose by 0.5% to $80.02 a barrel. Both benchmarks are near one-month highs. Despite assurances from the US President and the White House that the Strait remains open, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has stated it will remain closed until what it calls "America's evil deeds" cease. The US has also renewed a naval blockade on Iranian ports and imposed new sanctions on shipping networks.
Impact on Global Energy Supply and Developing Economies
Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), warned of a potential energy crisis if oil movement through the Strait of Hormuz does not soon stabilize. He noted that the supply crisis has particularly impacted Asian economies, which heavily rely on energy from this region. Developing nations like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India have been among the most affected.
Birol also highlighted potential health risks in developing countries, especially for women, as unaffordable petroleum products lead many households to switch to alternative cooking fuels like dung and wood, which produce more hazardous emissions.
