JSW Motors to Launch First SUV in India Dec 4: What to Expect

· · 2 min read

JSW Motors, the new passenger vehicle arm of JSW Group, will launch its first SUV in India on December 4. Expected to be a plug-in hybrid based on the Chery Jetour T2, it will feature a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine and electric motors.

JSW Motors, the recently established passenger vehicle division of the JSW Group, is set to introduce its inaugural car in the Indian market on December 4. This launch signifies the steel-to-cement conglomerate's significant expansion into the automotive sector.

The upcoming model is anticipated to be a plug-in hybrid SUV, drawing its foundation from China's Chery Automobile's Jetour T2. This strategic entry aims to position JSW Motors as a notable player in India's rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

Expected Specifications and Powertrain

A primary highlight of JSW Motors' debut offering, reportedly named the 'Combat', is its advanced electrified powertrain. The India-specific SUV is projected to feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, complemented by two electric motors and an 18.4kWh battery pack.

In its global configuration, the Jetour T2's plug-in hybrid system delivers a combined output of 360 hp and 610 Nm of torque. While the final specifications for the Indian market will be confirmed closer to the launch date, the global model boasts an impressive claimed combined driving range of 1,200 km, with an all-electric range of 90 km.

Design and Market Positioning

In terms of aesthetics, the new SUV is likely to retain the rugged, boxy design language characteristic of the Jetour T2. Minor modifications are expected in elements such as the headlamps, grille, and bumpers, along with the incorporation of JSW branding to establish its unique identity.

The five-seater SUV is expected to be priced competitively within the ₹30 lakh to ₹50 lakh bracket (ex-showroom). This positioning will place it in direct competition with other premium SUVs currently available in the Indian market, reflecting JSW Motors' ambition to target a discerning customer base.

JSW's Entry into India's EV Market

JSW Motors' venture into the Indian passenger vehicle market with a plug-in hybrid SUV underscores a growing interest in this technology within the country. Plug-in hybrids offer a compelling blend of conventional internal combustion engines with externally rechargeable batteries and electric motors, providing both range flexibility and reduced emissions.

This launch will also make it the second mass-market plug-in hybrid vehicle introduced this year, following the Hector Tomahawk PHEV by JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture between JSW Group and China’s SAIC Motor. The JSW Group's diversified presence across various industries now extends robustly into the automotive domain, signaling a new era for the conglomerate.
