JSW Motors, the passenger vehicle division of the JSW Group, is preparing to introduce its second mass-market plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in India this year. This new SUV, reportedly dubbed the 'Combat,' is expected to be a significant addition to the burgeoning Indian electric vehicle market, offering a compelling blend of power and range.
Introducing the JSW Combat PHEV
The upcoming JSW Motors plug-in hybrid SUV will be based on the Chery Jetour T2, a rugged and capable vehicle from the Chinese carmaker Chery. This strategic collaboration allows JSW Motors to leverage established automotive engineering while adapting the vehicle for the Indian market.
A key highlight of the 'Combat' is its advanced electrified powertrain. The India-spec SUV is anticipated to feature a robust 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, complemented by two electric motors and an 18.4 kWh battery pack. This setup is designed to deliver a combined output of 360 horsepower and 610 Nm of torque, promising spirited performance.
Impressive Range and Design
Globally, the Jetour T2 boasts a claimed combined range of an impressive 1,200 kilometres on a full tank and charge. Furthermore, it offers a pure-electric range of 90 kilometres, providing silent, emissions-free commuting for shorter distances. These figures position the JSW Combat as a highly practical option for both city driving and long-distance travel.
In terms of aesthetics, the PHEV is expected to closely mirror the Jetour T2's distinctive rugged design. It will likely feature a boxy silhouette, square-shaped LED headlamps, chunky bumpers, extensive body cladding, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Roof rails and vertically stacked LED tail-lamps, along with a spare wheel mounted on the bootlid, will further enhance its adventurous appeal. Minor revisions to the grille, headlamps, and bumpers, along with prominent JSW branding, are anticipated for the Indian version.
Pricing and Market Context
The five-seater JSW Combat PHEV is expected to be priced competitively, with estimates ranging between ₹30 lakh and ₹50 lakh. This pricing strategy aims to make advanced hybrid technology accessible to a broader segment of Indian consumers.
This launch follows closely on the heels of JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture between JSW Group and China’s SAIC Motor, introducing the Hector Tomahawk. The Hector Tomahawk, priced from ₹25,69,800 (ex-showroom), was India’s first mass-market plug-in hybrid vehicle. It features a 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid engine paired with a 20.5 kWh battery pack, offering a pure-electric range of 115 km and a combined range of 1,100 km. Deliveries for the Hector Tomahawk PHEV are scheduled to commence in November 2026.
