JSW MG Motor Unveils Hector Tomahawk EV to Boost Market Share
JSW MG Motor India has introduced the seven-seater Hector Tomahawk EV, a strategic move aimed at reclaiming its position as India's second-largest electric car manufacturer. The company is targeting over 10,000 monthly electric vehicle sales, a benchmark currently only achieved by Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.
Speaking to reporters, Parth Jindal, director at JSW MG Motor India, expressed confidence in achieving this goal with the new launches. "We will be the second company in India to cross 10,000 units of electric vehicle sales monthly," Jindal stated.
Features and Pricing of the New Electric SUV
The Hector Tomahawk EV is equipped with a robust 69.2 kWh battery pack, promising an impressive claimed range of 517 km on a single charge. Its ex-showroom price starts from ₹19.49 lakh, positioning it competitively within the C-segment electric SUV market.
JSW MG Motor India is also offering a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option for the Hector Tomahawk EV, priced at ₹13.99 lakh upfront, with an additional battery rental cost of ₹4.9 per kilometer. This model aims to make EV ownership more accessible and educate customers on the total cost of ownership.
Strategic Growth and Investment Plans
The launch of the Hector Tomahawk EV addresses a clear market demand, particularly from existing MG Windsor customers seeking a seven-seater electric option. Jindal noted the rapid growth in the C-segment electric SUV market, which sees approximately 10,000 units sold monthly, a segment where MG previously lacked a model.
To support its ambitious sales targets and expand its New Energy Vehicle (NEV) portfolio, JSW MG Motor India plans a significant investment of ₹3,500 crore. This capital injection will double the production capacity at its Halol, Gujarat plant from 110,000 units to 220,000 units annually. The company aims for a capacity of 160,000 units by March 2027 and 220,000 units by January 2028, alongside increasing localization to 70% for its MG Adapt and Windsor platforms.
India's Evolving EV Landscape
India's electric car penetration reached a record 8% in July, with projections to hit 10% by the end of the year. Jindal highlighted the aggressive competition and growth within the EV sector, predicting that 30% EV penetration by 2030 is increasingly seen as a feasible target.
JSW Group holds a 35% stake in JSW MG Motor India, underscoring a strong commitment to the NEV segment, from which the automaker aims to derive at least 75% of its total sales. The strategic focus on expanding its EV offerings and production capabilities positions JSW MG Motor as a key player in India's accelerating electric mobility transition.
