JSW Group in Talks to Acquire Majority Stake in Volkswagen's India Unit

· · 2 min read

Sajjan Jindal's JSW Group is reportedly in discussions to acquire a majority stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd. This potential deal comes as Volkswagen struggles with a 2% market share in the competitive Indian auto market.

The Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group is reportedly in advanced discussions with German automotive giant Volkswagen AG to acquire a majority stake in its Indian subsidiary, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd. This potential strategic move could significantly reshape the landscape of India's rapidly growing automotive market, where Volkswagen has faced considerable challenges.

Volkswagen's Stalled India Ambitions

Volkswagen Group, which initially entered the Indian market in 2001 through its Czech brand Skoda, has struggled to establish a dominant presence. Despite India being the world’s third-largest car market, the German carmaker currently holds only about a 2% share of the passenger vehicle segment. This performance lags significantly behind its Japanese and Korean competitors, prompting a re-evaluation of its operational strategy in the country.

JSW Group's Expanding Automotive Footprint

For the JSW Group, a conglomerate with interests spanning steel to cement, this potential acquisition marks a significant expansion of its automotive ambitions. The group already holds a 35% stake in JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture with China's SAIC Motor. Furthermore, JSW Motors is actively setting up a greenfield electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra, signaling its intent to become a major player in India’s burgeoning EV sector.

Negotiation Hurdles Remain

While top executives from both Volkswagen and JSW have reportedly held several meetings, the deal is not yet finalized. Key sticking points, including the precise valuation of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd and the capital investment commitments from both JSW and Volkswagen, are still under negotiation, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India's Statement

In response to the market speculation, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India issued a statement acknowledging that India is a crucial market within Skoda Auto’s internationalization plans. The company indicated it is "always considering new business opportunities and evaluating various options" to optimize its strategy in the dynamic Indian market. While refraining from commenting on specific rumors, the statement reaffirmed the company's commitment to delivering innovative mobility solutions to Indian consumers.
