JSW Greentech, the dedicated commercial electric mobility company of the JSW Group, has officially entered India's electric bus market with the rollout of its first 100 'Made in India' electric buses. The inaugural fleet was launched on August 1, 2026, at JSW Steel's Dolvi plant in Maharashtra, signifying a major milestone in the country's transition to sustainable transportation.
Sajjan Jindal, Chairman of the JSW Group, announced the launch via a post on X (formerly Twitter), commending the JSW Greentech team, led by Sumit Mittal, for their efforts in developing these indigenous electric vehicles. The introduction of these buses is expected to initially support employee transportation and other operational mobility needs within the Dolvi facility, paving the way for wider electric mobility solutions across JSW Group's industrial operations.
JSW Greentech's Strategic Vision and Expansion
Established in 2024, JSW Greentech aims to leverage the JSW Group's extensive industrial capabilities and scale to accelerate the adoption of clean transportation in India. The company's technology platform, engineered in-house at its Pune R&D centre, combines local innovation with select global partnerships.
Looking ahead, JSW Greentech is developing a greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. This expansive 90-acre plant is projected to have an impressive annual manufacturing capacity of 10,000 electric buses and 5,000 electric trucks, underscoring the company's ambitious plans for the electric commercial vehicle segment.
India's Growing Electric Bus Landscape
The launch by JSW Greentech highlights the increasing momentum in India's electric bus sector, which is actively supported by government incentives through various schemes. The market is witnessing robust competition and innovation from several players.
- Switch Mobility, the electric vehicle subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, was the leading electric bus manufacturer in India for the financial year 2025-26, selling 1,166 units.
- JBM Auto and PMI Electro Mobility followed Switch Mobility in sales volume.
- Eka Mobility, based in Pune, secured a significant order for approximately 3,500 e-buses under the government’s PM E-Drive scheme.
- SML Mahindra, a newly acquired commercial vehicle arm of Mahindra & Mahindra, is also preparing to launch its first electric bus within the current financial year.
It is notable that several Indian electric bus manufacturers have formed technology partnerships with Chinese companies. For instance, Hyderabad-based Olectra Greentech collaborates with China’s BYD for technology, importing battery cells, battery management systems (BMS), and certain motor components. Similarly, KKR-backed PMI Electro has a technical collaboration with China’s Beiqi Foton Motor Co., and secured the largest order of 5,210 electric buses under the PM E-Drive scheme.
