JSW Energy Shares Downgraded by MOFSL After Q1 Earnings Report

· · 2 min read

Motilal Oswal Financial Services downgraded JSW Energy shares to 'Neutral' following its Q1 FY27 earnings, citing a 17% stock rally and reduced valuation comfort. The brokerage also pared FY28 EBITDA estimates by 9% due to a slower renewable commissioning pace.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) has downgraded JSW Energy shares to a 'Neutral' rating following the company's Q1 FY27 earnings announcement. The brokerage cited a significant 17% rally in the stock over the past four months, which has reduced valuation comfort.

Reasons Behind the Downgrade

MOFSL's decision stems from a combination of factors. The brokerage noted that JSW Energy shares are currently trading at 12 times its FY28E EV/EBITDA, indicating that the recent surge in stock price has adequately priced in the company's strengths.

Additionally, MOFSL pared its FY28 EBITDA estimates for JSW Energy by 9%. This revision primarily reflects a slower-than-previously-assumed pace of renewable energy commissioning, projecting 4GW by FY28 instead of earlier expectations.

"Our revised TP of Rs 550 implies a 2% downside, prompting us to downgrade the stock to Neutral. While the company's long-term growth outlook remains compelling, we believe the current valuation adequately reflects these strengths," MOFSL stated.

Q1 FY27 Financial Performance

JSW Energy reported a notable decline in its net profit for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. The company's net profit fell by 36% to Rs 532 crore, compared to Rs 835 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year.

Despite the profit dip, revenue for the quarter saw a marginal increase, rising to Rs 5,437 crore from Rs 5,411 crore a year earlier. The firm also managed to reduce its net debt to Rs 61,322 crore as of June 30, 2026, largely attributed to successful fundraising efforts.

Operational Highlights:

  • Overall power sales decreased by 5% to 12.9 billion units (BUs).
  • Thermal generation experienced a 6% fall to 8 BUs, primarily due to lower output from its Mahanadi plant.
  • Renewable energy generation also saw a 3% decline to 4.8 BUs, impacted by weaker hydrology affecting hydro plants.
  • Net long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) sales were down 4% to 11.2 BUs.
  • Short-term thermal sales remained flat at 1.6 BUs.

In the previous trading session, JSW Energy shares closed at Rs 561.75 on a relatively flat note, with the company's market capitalization standing at Rs 1.03 lakh crore.
