Jio Platforms Q1 Performance: Analysts Examine IPO Valuation & Future Triggers

· · 3 min read

Jio Platforms reported robust Q1 growth, driven by subscriber additions and digital services. Analysts are closely scrutinizing its financial performance and anticipating its IPO, with valuations ranging from Rs 431 to Rs 664 per RIL share.

Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), has delivered another quarter of steady growth, marked by strong subscriber additions and expanding digital service offerings. As the company gears up for one of India's most anticipated initial public offerings (IPO), investors and analysts are keenly evaluating its financial health and future prospects.

Q1 Financial Highlights and Growth Drivers

For the first quarter, Reliance Jio reported a net profit increase of 9.2 percent year-on-year (YoY), reaching Rs 7,764 crore. Operating revenue also saw a significant jump of 12 percent YoY, totaling Rs 45,961 crore. This growth was primarily fueled by a rapidly expanding subscriber base, which now stands at an impressive 533.3 million.

The average revenue per user (ARPU) for the quarter was Rs 215.6. Jio Platforms also recorded a 15 percent YoY surge in its EBITDA, hitting Rs 20,865 crore, with margins expanding by 150 basis points to 53.3 percent. The company added 8.9 million new subscribers during the period, and per capita data consumption reached 43.7 GB per month, contributing to a total data traffic growth of 26.9 percent YoY.

Analyst Perspectives on Performance and IPO Valuation

Market analysts have offered varied insights into Jio Platforms' Q1 performance and its potential IPO valuation:

  • Emkay Global noted that Jio's topline growth and ARPU were in line with expectations, supported by consistent subscriber additions. The firm highlighted operating leverage, with EBITDAM expanding by 40 basis points, though this was offset by higher finance costs and depreciation due to 5G asset capitalization. Emkay values Reliance Jio's contribution at Rs 596 per share in RIL's overall valuation. They anticipate a wireless tariff hike in 2QFY27, driving 15.3 percent YoY revenue growth for FY27E.
  • Motilal Oswal Financial Services observed that home broadband (HBB) net additions moderated to 1.5 million. Digital services revenue grew 20 percent YoY, outpacing connectivity growth, with EBITDA growth even higher at 53 percent YoY. Motilal Oswal assigns an equity valuation of Rs 431 per share to RIL’s stake in Jio Platforms, applying a 25 percent holdco discount. They project a revenue, EBITDA, and PAT CAGR of 14 percent, 17 percent, and 25 percent, respectively, for FY27-28, contingent on tariff hikes and accelerated home broadband/enterprise offerings.
  • Elara Capital pointed out that the digital services revenue, including content, cloud, IoT, and managed services, grew 20 percent YoY, exceeding connectivity growth. Despite strong EBITDA growth, higher finance costs and depreciation from 5G capitalization limited PAT growth to 9 percent YoY. Elara Capital values Jio Platforms at Rs 664 per share within RIL's valuation framework.

Roadmap to IPO and Key Variables

Jio Platforms has already filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with SEBI, formally commencing the listing process. This IPO is expected to establish a significant valuation benchmark for RIL's largest EBITDA contributor in India’s burgeoning digital and technology sector. Key factors that will influence the IPO include the ultimate valuation, whether the issuance will be primary or secondary, the extent of dilution, the utilization of proceeds, and RIL's post-listing holding.

Analysts concur that sustained double-digit EBITDA growth and the increasing contribution from diverse digital services will be crucial in supporting Jio Platforms' valuation. However, the impact of higher depreciation and finance costs due to 5G infrastructure rollout remains a significant consideration for its profitability trajectory.
