Jio Platforms IPO: Analysts Advise Subscribe, Flag 5 Key Risks Amid Reasonable Valuation

· · 3 min read

Brokerages recommend subscribing to the Jio Platforms IPO, opening October 21, citing reasonable valuations compared to Bharti Airtel. Despite strong market leadership and 5G growth, analysts flag five key risks for potential investors.

Jio Platforms Ltd (JPL) is set to open its initial public offering (IPO) for public bidding on October 21. Several financial analysts have issued 'subscribe' recommendations, pointing to the company's robust market position and what they consider reasonable valuations.

Jio's Market Dominance and Growth

Jio Platforms commands a significant presence in the Indian telecommunications sector, boasting 53.33 crore customers. The company holds a 50 percent share of the wireless broadband market and 42.6 percent of the fixed broadband market. Analysts highlight that Jio accounts for 60 percent of India’s wireless data traffic and operates the largest 5G customer base outside of China.

Emkay Global noted Jio's rapid expansion, reaching 10 crore customers within 180 days of its launch and capturing 42.67 percent of India's broadband customer share within a year. The company was also the first in India to surpass 1 crore fiber broadband customers and achieved a nationwide standalone 5G rollout in approximately one year, marking one of the fastest global 5G deployments.

Financial projections indicate strong performance, with Emkay Global reporting a 15.8 percent revenue Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for Jio Platforms between FY24 and FY26. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) is projected to increase from Rs 181.70 to Rs 214 in the same period, accompanied by 4.26 crore subscriber additions. The completion of its 5G infrastructure has also led to a significant reduction in capital expenditure, falling from 48.8 percent to 23.3 percent of revenue over FY24-26.

Valuation and Peer Comparison

At its proposed price band, JPL is valued at 31.7-33.3 times FY26 EPS and 15.0-15.6 times FY26 EV/Ebitda, against its 16.2 percent Ebitda CAGR, according to Emkay Global. Swastika Investmart noted that Jio's IPO is priced at 33.3 times earnings per share, which is 18 percent below Bharti Airtel’s 40.71 times. Jio’s 12 times EV/Ebitda multiple is considered reasonable given its higher market share, double-digit Ebitda growth rate, and dominant home broadband expansion.

While Jio commands a 15-17 percent multiple premium over Bharti Airtel’s India business, Airtel currently offers superior Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) and higher current ARPU. Analysts also emphasize the structural health of the Indian telecom industry, where tariff discipline among major players like Jio, Airtel, and Vi has created an ideal environment for ongoing ARPU increases.

Analyst Recommendations

Both Emkay Global and Swastika Investmart have recommended subscribing to the Jio Platforms IPO. Emkay cited Jio's market leadership, pricing power, growth levers, and execution record as key reasons. Swastika Investmart described Jio as a core structural compounder for India’s digital economy, underpinned by strong cash generation, declining leverage, and increasing home broadband adoption.

Key Investment Risks

Despite the positive outlook, Emkay Global highlighted five key risks for potential investors:

  • Spectrum Costs and Regulatory Changes: Future changes in spectrum pricing or other regulatory policies could impact profitability.
  • Competitive Intensity: Intense competition within the telecom sector could affect ARPU and subscriber churn rates.
  • Dependence on Reliance Group: Significant reliance on other Reliance Group entities for operations and strategic direction.
  • Concentration in Vendors: High concentration in passive infrastructure and equipment vendors could pose supply chain or cost risks.
  • Leverage and Foreign-Exchange Exposure: The company's leverage levels and exposure to foreign exchange fluctuations could impact financial stability.
