Jio Platforms Discusses Tech-for-Equity Deals with Comcast, Charter for Global UBR Expansion

· · 2 min read

Jio Platforms is reportedly in talks with global telecom firms, including Comcast and Charter Communications, to license its Unlicensed Band Radio (UBR) technology. These potential tech-for-equity deals aim to expand Jio's high-speed broadband solution internationally.

Jio Platforms, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, is actively pursuing international expansion by engaging in discussions with several global telecom companies. Sources familiar with the matter indicate that these talks include US cable giants Comcast and Charter Communications, focusing on licensing Jio's proprietary Unlicensed Band Radio (UBR) technology in exchange for potential equity stakes.

Jio's Global Ambition with UBR Technology

The core of Jio's international strategy revolves around its UBR technology. This innovative system leverages unlicensed Wi-Fi frequencies to deliver high-speed broadband services. Transmitters mounted on nearby towers or rooftops can provide connectivity directly to homes, eliminating the need for traditional cable connections.

Jio's managing director, Akash Ambani, has stated the company's intent to introduce UBR technology to both developed and developing markets, emphasizing a selective approach to expansion. Rather than building its own networks overseas, Jio aims to operate as a technology-led business, partnering with existing operators.

Why Global Operators Are Interested

For companies like Comcast, which reported approximately 28.3 million residential broadband customers by the end of September, and Charter, with around 29.4 million internet customers in June, Jio's UBR technology presents a compelling solution. Both US operators have faced increasing competition from fiber and fixed wireless providers, leading to customer losses. UBR could enable them to offer broadband services at significantly lower costs, enhancing their competitive edge.

Previous Talks and Future Outlook

While discussions are ongoing with various firms, not all have progressed smoothly. Jio reportedly held talks with South Africa’s MTN Group, but these negotiations ultimately fell through due to disagreements over valuation and specific licensing terms. Currently, there is no set timetable for reaching agreements with Comcast, Charter, or any other prospective partners.

Jio Platforms has publicly stated its target of securing 10 to 15 global partners for its technology platform. The company already boasts nearly 15 million wired broadband users in India, with its UBR-powered user base exceeding 6.5 million. The international expansion effort is spearheaded by Dan Bailey, a former Deutsche Bank executive, and senior company executive Mathew Oommen.
