Jio Marks 10 Years: Akash Ambani Targets Global Tech Expansion

· · 3 min read

On its 10th anniversary, Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani announced plans to expand its 'made-in-India' technology stack globally. The vision includes taking Jio's connectivity, digital products, enterprise solutions, and AI initiatives to international markets, marking a strategic shift.

Mumbai, India – Reliance Jio, the digital services giant that transformed India’s telecommunications landscape, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an ambitious new vision for global expansion. In a letter to employees on September 5, Chairman Akash Ambani outlined plans to transition Jio from a domestic digital builder to an international technology creator.

A Decade of Disruption and Growth

Jio commercially launched on September 5, 2016, following internal trials. It rapidly disrupted the Indian market by offering free voice calls and highly competitive data pricing. This aggressive strategy led to unprecedented growth, with the operator acquiring 50 million subscribers in just 83 days and exceeding 100 million in under six months.

Over the past decade, Jio has added nearly 500 million net subscribers, a figure that surpasses the combined growth of the top three US telecom providers during the same period and is 1.3 times that of its closest domestic competitor. As of June 30, 2026, Jio’s subscriber base reached an impressive 533.3 million. The company now manages over 23 exabytes of monthly data traffic, establishing itself as one of the largest global data networks.

From Telecom Leader to Global Tech Innovator

Ambani emphasized that Jio has evolved beyond a traditional telecom company. "Jio today is much more than a telecom company. We are building original technology in India across connectivity, digital products, enterprise solutions and AI," he wrote. The strategic shift involves taking these 'made-in-India' technologies to international markets, aiming to strengthen India's position as a global technology creator.

The global expansion strategy will focus on several key areas:

  • Connectivity Infrastructure: Leveraging its expertise in building large-scale networks.
  • Digital Consumer Products: Exporting successful consumer-facing applications and services.
  • Enterprise Solutions: Offering business-to-business technology services developed in India.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Developing and deploying AI-driven solutions on a global scale.

Foundational Vision and Employee Contribution

Reflecting on the journey, Ambani acknowledged the foundational vision set by his father, Chairman Mukesh Ambani, "to make high-quality digital connectivity affordable and accessible to every Indian." He also credited Jio's workforce for their crucial role in overcoming technical challenges and scaling operations.

"Every day, teams across Jio have taken on difficult challenges, questioned established ways of doing things, created new products and technologies, and served our customers with commitment. That willingness to think differently, move with speed and keep the customer at the centre of everything we do has shaped Jio from the very beginning," Ambani stated in his letter.

This new phase marks a significant turning point for Jio, positioning it not just as a dominant force in India but as a formidable player in the global technology arena.
