InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, parent company of IndiGo airline, reported a significant net loss in the first quarter, primarily attributed to a sharp increase in operating costs. The airline recorded a standalone net loss of Rs 382 crore for Q1, a stark contrast to the net profit of Rs 2,161 crore in the same period last year.
Rising Costs Erase Profitability
Despite a 20% rise in revenue from operations, reaching Rs 24,584 crore, expenses surged at an even faster pace of 35.1%. A major contributor to this erosion of margins was an almost 86% increase in aircraft fuel expenses, which climbed to Rs 10,830 crore. IndiGo directly cited "a combination of fuel price escalation, adverse foreign exchange movement and the Middle East conflict" as factors impacting profitability during the quarter.
Brokerages Adjust Share Price Targets
Following the Q1 earnings report, several brokerage firms have updated their outlook and share price targets for IndiGo's stock:
- Elara: Reiterate a 'buy' call, maintaining a target price of Rs 6020. Elara noted that the underlying demand and fare thesis remains strong despite the Q1 miss, citing constrained industry capacity and IndiGo's strategy to test higher yields.
- JPMorgan: Maintained a 'neutral' call with a target price of Rs 4740. JPMorgan highlighted that Q1 earnings missed estimates due to higher-than-expected fuel and non-fuel costs, suggesting that volatility might persist throughout the year.
- Jefferies: Raised its price target to Rs 5840 from the earlier Rs 5380, issuing an 'accumulate' call. Jefferies acknowledged that high fuel costs were only partially offset by strong yield growth in the June quarter, anticipating subdued near-term earnings.
Outlook Amidst Market Volatility
The airline industry continues to navigate a challenging environment. While IndiGo's management aims for measured capacity growth and a focus on yields to offset costs in the upcoming fiscal year (FY27), the immediate outlook remains cautious. Renewed Middle East tensions further add to the volatility, impacting crude oil prices and the overall operational landscape for airlines.
