An IndiGo flight from Patna to Lucknow was struck by lightning at 17,000 feet on October 7, damaging its nose. Despite the incident, the pilots safely landed the aircraft at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, with all 104 passengers and 6 crew unhurt.

An IndiGo flight operating from Patna to Lucknow experienced a mid-air lightning strike at approximately 17,000 feet on Wednesday, October 7. The incident resulted in damage to the aircraft’s nose section, specifically the radome, which houses critical equipment like the weather radar.

Safe Landing Amidst Adverse Weather

Despite the significant impact, the pilots of IndiGo flight 6E925 maintained control and executed a safe landing at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow. The aircraft, carrying 104 passengers and six crew members, touched down around 4:05 pm, slightly ahead of its scheduled arrival.

According to IndiGo, the aircraft encountered unfavorable weather conditions, including hail, during its approach to Lucknow. All individuals on board disembarked safely, with no injuries reported.

Aircraft Grounded for Inspection

Following the safe landing, the extent of the damage to the aircraft’s nose radome became apparent. The plane was immediately grounded at Lucknow airport for a thorough technical inspection by engineers.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed of the incident and will oversee the investigation. The aircraft requires necessary regulatory clearance and maintenance before it can be returned to service.

Passengers Re-routed to Ahmedabad

The affected aircraft was scheduled to operate a subsequent IndiGo service from Lucknow to Ahmedabad. To minimize disruption, IndiGo promptly arranged a replacement aircraft for the onward journey.

The 104 passengers bound for Ahmedabad departed on the alternate flight at approximately 6:22 pm, while engineers continued their assessment of the damaged aircraft to determine the scope of required repairs.

DGCA Investigation Underway

Aviation authorities are actively investigating the IndiGo lightning strike incident. Preliminary information suggests that adverse weather conditions, including a possible lightning strike and hail, played a role. The ongoing probe will determine the precise cause and any necessary safety recommendations.
