IndiGo is experiencing further shifts within its senior management as Vinay Malhotra, the airline's Global Sales Head, has stepped down from his position. This development, reported on May 4, 2026, comes shortly after the departure of former CEO Pieter Elbers in March 2026, signaling a period of significant leadership transitions for the carrier.
Malhotra, who oversaw IndiGo's international sales strategy, had been with the airline for four years. His resignation adds to a series of high-profile exits that have brought increased scrutiny to the airline's executive team. The leadership changes have reportedly prompted IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia to consider a restructuring of key allocations within the leadership framework.
Following Elbers' exit, Bhatia has been directly overseeing the airline's operations. IndiGo has already announced the appointment of Willie Walsh, currently the chief of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), as its new CEO. Walsh is expected to assume his role before August 2026, bringing a new direction to the airline's leadership.
Before his tenure at IndiGo, Malhotra held a prominent role as the Regional Group Chief Operating Officer for South Asia, the Middle East & North Africa, and the Americas at VFS Global. In this Dubai-based position, he was responsible for managing core visa services and strengthening allied B2C travel services globally. His extensive experience in the aviation and travel sectors also includes a decade-long stint at Emirates, as well as significant contributions at Swissair and Galileo.
The leadership churn at IndiGo follows an operational crisis in December 2025, which highlighted challenges in planning and crew management. Bhatia's direct involvement in overseeing affairs post-Elbers suggests a proactive approach to stabilizing the airline amidst these transitions.
