Rakesh Gangwal, the co-founder of Indian airline IndiGo, has significantly bolstered the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur's medical ambitions with a fresh donation of ₹300 crore. This latest contribution is earmarked for the continued development of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, an initiative aimed at integrating engineering and medical sciences.
This new pledge increases Gangwal's total commitment to the school to ₹400 crore, following an initial ₹100 crore donation in 2022 that helped launch the medical school project. In an effort to encourage broader philanthropic support, Gangwal will also provide matching grants of up to ₹300 crore against contributions from other donors.
Advancing Medical Education and Research
The Gangwal School's ambitious development plans include the establishment of a state-of-the-art 500-bed super-speciality hospital directly on the IIT Kanpur campus. Additionally, a 200-bed cancer care research center has been proposed, aiming to provide advanced treatment and facilitate critical research.
These facilities are designed to serve multiple purposes: supporting comprehensive medical education, fostering clinical research, and enhancing healthcare delivery. A core objective is to create a collaborative environment where medical professionals, researchers, engineers, and technology experts can converge to address pressing healthcare challenges through interdisciplinary innovation.
Vision for a Unique Institution
Professor Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, expressed gratitude for the donation, noting that Gangwal's initial contribution in 2022 was instrumental in setting the institute's plans in motion. "This additional contribution of ₹300 crore by Mr. Gangwal will help us bring this vision into reality sooner," Agrawal stated.
The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is envisioned as a pioneering institution, combining IIT Kanpur's renowned strengths in engineering, science, and technology with the complexities of medical sciences. It will focus on cutting-edge academic programs, interdisciplinary research, futuristic medicine, and MedTech innovation.
Professor Anil K Lalwani, recently appointed Dean of the school, highlighted the transformative power of individual philanthropy. He emphasized that the school's unique vision to integrate medicine, technology, and innovation is expected to create an impact far beyond the IIT Kanpur campus.
Rakesh Gangwal's Journey from IIT Kanpur to IndiGo
Rakesh Gangwal is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur, having graduated with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering in 1975. He later pursued an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His distinguished career in the aviation industry began with roles at Philips India and Ford Motor Co., before he joined United Airlines in 1984.
Gangwal held various leadership positions at United Airlines, eventually becoming President and CEO of US Airways Group in 1998. He also served as an executive vice president at Air France and chairman, president, and CEO of Worldspan Technologies before co-founding IndiGo, which grew to become one of India's largest airlines. IIT Kanpur recognized his achievements by conferring its Distinguished Alumnus Award on him in 2000.
