India's UPI Processes Nearly Half of Global Real-Time Payments, Leading the World

· · 3 min read

India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) now accounts for almost 49% of global real-time payment transactions, marking a decade of transformative growth. This platform has cemented India's position as a world leader in instant digital payments.

India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has emerged as a global powerhouse in digital transactions, now handling nearly half of all real-time payment volumes worldwide. Completing a decade since its launch, UPI's exponential growth has not only revolutionized how India conducts commerce but has also positioned the nation as a benchmark for digital payment infrastructure globally.

A Decade of Digital Transformation

Launched on August 25, 2016, by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) oversight, UPI was designed as an interoperable, real-time system facilitating both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. Its adoption has been staggering.

From a modest 1.78 crore transactions in the fiscal year 2016-17, UPI volume surged to over 24,162 crore by FY2025-26—an almost 13,000-fold increase. Transaction value similarly escalated from ₹0.07 lakh crore to approximately ₹314 lakh crore over the same period. In 2026 alone, UPI processed an average of 66 crore transactions daily, reaching a record 2,366 crore monthly transactions and ₹29.88 lakh crore in value by July.

Reshaping Indian Commerce

The impact of UPI extends far beyond mere transaction numbers; it has fundamentally altered the landscape of Indian commerce. Akash Sinha, Co-founder & CEO of Cashfree Payments, highlights how UPI addressed a critical payments gap that previously hindered online businesses.

“Ten years ago, starting an online business in India meant working around a real payments gap. Digital payment options were limited, so a typical D2C brand, for example, ran heavily on cash on delivery, with high return rates and working-capital strain built into every order,” Sinha noted. “Digital payment is now second nature for Indian consumers, and cash-on-delivery dependence for online-first merchants has come down sharply as a result.”

This widespread adoption has expanded the addressable market for startups and instilled confidence in founders, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for new businesses across the country.

Factors Behind Rapid Adoption

Several key factors contributed to UPI's rapid scaling. Broad institutional participation has been crucial, with the number of banks live on the platform expanding from 21 at launch to 741 by July 2026, encompassing public, private, small finance, payment, and cooperative banks.

Moreover, UPI's everyday utility is evident in its transaction patterns. P2M payments constitute 63% of transaction volume, with 86% of these transactions being under ₹500 in FY2026. This demonstrates how deeply UPI has integrated into routine retail payments, from minor purchases to larger transfers.

Expanding Global Footprint

UPI's influence is now global, with the platform operational in 11 countries, including the UAE, France, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, and the Maldives. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recognized UPI as the world’s largest real-time payment system by transaction volume, acknowledging its blend of interoperability, scale, and accessibility as a model for digital public infrastructure worldwide.

The Next Frontier for UPI

Looking ahead, UPI's next phase aims to extend its impact beyond payments into broader financial services and commerce. Siddharth Mehta, Co-founder & COO of Kiwi, suggests that the simplicity driving UPI's daily adoption could also simplify financial products.

“The first decade of UPI was about making digital payments simple and accessible. The next could be about doing the same for financial products. Credit on UPI is one step in that direction, making credit more relevant to everyday spending without adding complexity to how people pay,” Mehta explained.

With ongoing international expansion and the growth of features like UPI Lite and credit on UPI, the platform's transformative effect is expected to compound, further enabling founders to build innovative financial solutions.
