· · 2 min read

India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has expanded its global reach, allowing Indian travelers and businesses to make seamless digital payments in nine countries. This move reduces reliance on cash and international card networks for cross-border transactions.

India's groundbreaking Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has significantly expanded its global footprint, enabling Indian users to conduct seamless digital transactions in nine countries worldwide. This international rollout marks a major milestone for India's digital public infrastructure, offering a convenient alternative to traditional cash and international card networks for cross-border payments.

UPI's Journey: From Domestic Success to Global Expansion

Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), UPI was launched on April 11, 2016. Its primary goal was to facilitate instant, bank-to-bank money transfers via mobile devices. Over the past decade, UPI has revolutionized India's payment landscape, making digital transactions rapid, accessible, and user-friendly for millions.

The platform has witnessed explosive growth domestically. Transaction volumes surged from 4,595.61 crore (₹84.16 lakh crore) in FY 2021–2022 to an impressive 18,586.60 crore in FY 2024–2025. This remarkable success at home laid the groundwork for its ambitious international expansion.

Where Can Indians Use UPI Globally?

Through strategic partnerships between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), foreign governments, banks, and local payment service providers, UPI is now operational in a growing list of countries. Indian travelers and businesses can utilize their familiar UPI-enabled applications for QR-code-based merchant payments in these destinations:

  • Bhutan (since 2021)
  • Singapore (since 2023)
  • France (since 2024)
  • Mauritius (since 2024)
  • Nepal (since 2024)
  • Sri Lanka (since 2024)
  • United Arab Emirates (UAE) (since 2024)
  • Qatar (since 2025)
  • Cambodia (since 2026)

Impact of UPI's Global Reach

The rapid international adoption of UPI underscores India's position as a leader in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Beyond simplifying payments for tourists, this expansion is expected to:

  • Facilitate cross-border trade more efficiently.
  • Improve the flow of remittances, making them faster and more cost-effective.
  • Offer a robust alternative to traditional, often more expensive, international payment mechanisms.

As more countries express interest in integrating or adopting this successful payment system, UPI is increasingly recognized as one of India's most significant technology exports and a vital tool in its digital diplomacy efforts.
