India is on the cusp of a monumental energy transformation, with its installed electricity capacity projected to exceed 2,000 GW by 2047. This represents a near fourfold increase from current levels, driven predominantly by a dramatic expansion in clean energy sources.
According to the 'India’s Power & Energy Transformation Outlook' report by the Energy & Climate Initiatives Society (ENCIS), solar power alone is expected to surge from 119 GW to more than 1,100 GW. This ambitious growth underscores the immense infrastructure, innovation, and policy support necessary to achieve India's 'Viksit Bharat' vision.
Remarkably, non-fossil sources already account for 53% of India's 540 GW installed capacity, reaching this milestone five years ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, peak electricity demand has nearly tripled since 2000 and is forecast to hit 366 GW by 2032, a 34% jump fueled by new demands from data centers, e-mobility, and green hydrogen initiatives.
Grid Connectivity: The Foremost Hurdle
Despite the rapid capacity additions, the primary challenge facing India's power sector is the development of a robust grid and market architecture capable of seamlessly integrating renewables, storage solutions, and emerging technologies at scale. Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), emphasized this point, stating, "It’s not just about adding megawatts; our real challenge now is to build a grid and market architecture that can integrate renewables, storage, and new technologies at scale, ensuring reliability, flexibility, and affordability for a future-ready economy."
The report highlights critical targets for the coming years. India must nearly triple its renewable energy deployment by 2030, aiming for 500 GW of non-fossil capacity while maintaining system reliability. Grid-scale energy storage will need to increase fortyfold to 200 GWh by 2030, marking an unprecedented infrastructure leap.
Digital Reforms and Distribution Bottlenecks
Significant progress is being made in digital reforms, with nationwide smart meter deployment on track to reach 250 million units by FY2028. This initiative will enable real-time management of 90% of consumer demand and is expected to reduce average Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses below 10% nationally for the first time, down from the current 15%.
However, the distribution segment remains a critical bottleneck, with 44 GW of renewable projects currently stalled due to contract or financing issues. While coal-fired power plants will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring grid stability, operating at a minimum 40% technical load and 3% ramp rates by 2030, the focus remains firmly on clean energy expansion.
Overall, India's power sector will require an estimated $0.5 trillion in investment by 2030, alongside the creation of over one million new skilled jobs to facilitate this profound digital and clean energy transformation.
