India's Passenger Vehicle Market to Surpass 5.3 Million Units by FY27: Maruti Suzuki

· · 3 min read

Maruti Suzuki forecasts India's passenger vehicle industry to exceed 5.3 million units in FY27, driven by strong demand and an increase in first-time buyers. Small car sales are also witnessing a significant revival across the country.

India's passenger vehicle (PV) industry is projected to surpass the 5.3 million-unit mark in the current financial year, according to a recent statement from Maruti Suzuki India. Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer of Marketing & Sales at Maruti Suzuki, revealed this forecast at the 66th SIAM Annual Convention, attributing the robust growth to sustained market demand following last year's Goods and Services Tax (GST) reduction.

The industry is expected to sell between 53-54 lakh vehicles in the financial year, a notable increase from approximately 48 lakh units sold last year, indicating a growth rate exceeding 10%. Currently, the automotive sector averages around 4.5 lakh unit sales monthly.

Demand Drivers and Affordability

Banerjee highlighted that the growth momentum is particularly strong in the lower-priced vehicle segment, which has benefited significantly from recent GST adjustments. Vehicles subject to 18% GST have seen over 30% growth, while the 40% GST segment has also expanded by about 20%.

Improved affordability is attracting more first-time buyers to the market, a crucial trend supporting further motorization in India. "The share of first-time buyers is now 54%," Banerjee stated, noting that Maruti Suzuki alone has observed a nearly 10% year-on-year increase in this demographic.

Small Car Revival and Inventory Challenges

Small cars are experiencing a sharp revival in demand. Maruti Suzuki reported selling over 21,000 WagonR units and approximately 10,000 Alto units last month. The small car segment's growth currently stands at around 83%, though Banerjee anticipates this rate will moderate as the comparison base grows.

This resurgence is attributed to three key factors: the reduction in GST rates, tax benefits that have increased consumer disposable income, and lower interest rates, which have reduced Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs).

Despite the strong demand, Maruti Suzuki is grappling with tight inventory levels as the festive season approaches. Banerjee mentioned that the company's dealer network currently holds about 16 days of stock, significantly below the ideal level of at least 30 days during peak festival periods. "The market demand is more," he acknowledged, adding that production and supply-chain teams are actively working to boost output, with new production lines expected to reach full capacity within the next three to four months.

Rural Markets and Future Investments

Rural markets are playing an increasingly vital role, with Maruti Suzuki's penetration in these areas reaching 53%. Additionally, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles remain a cornerstone of the company's multi-powertrain strategy, accounting for approximately 43% of its product portfolio.

Looking ahead, Maruti Suzuki has outlined plans to invest ₹77,500 crore over the next four financial years. The company also intends to introduce seven new SUVs across various segments and powertrains, including a compact electric SUV, over the next five years, signaling a strategic focus on expanding its utility vehicle offerings and embracing electrification.
