India's Late-Night FIFA World Cup Orders Reveal Shifting Consumer Habits

· · 2 min read

During the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, Indian fans placed significantly more late-night grocery orders, stocking up on snacks and beverages. Data shows a surge in demand for instant noodles, chips, and healthier drink options, particularly in smaller towns and during the match's second half.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 final didn't just keep millions of Indian football enthusiasts glued to their screens into the early hours; it also sparked a notable surge in late-night grocery deliveries across the nation. As the midnight kick-off approached, fans turned their living rooms into impromptu watch parties, relying on quick-commerce platforms to keep their supplies stocked.

According to data released by Instamart, late-night orders during the final match were considerably higher than those on a typical Sunday. Customers opted for larger basket values, indicating a strategic move to stock up for the entire game rather than making small, frequent purchases.

Football Fever Spreads Beyond Metros

While major Indian cities remained active, some of the most dramatic spikes in demand originated from smaller, football-loving towns. Hosur, for instance, recorded the highest increase, with orders jumping an impressive 41.9% compared to a regular weekend. Other cities experiencing notable growth included Tirunelveli, Jodhpur, Sonipat, Roorkee, Kozhikode, Lonavala, Palakkad, Guwahati, and Bilaspur.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru registered some of the highest average basket values, suggesting a trend of group screenings and house parties where larger quantities of provisions were ordered.

Instant Noodles & Classic Snacks Dominate

For viewers unwilling to miss a single moment of the on-field action, instant noodles emerged as the undisputed favorite among ready-to-eat meals. Their quick preparation time made them an ideal choice for sustained match-watching.

Classic match-night companions like chips and namkeen continued their reign as the most popular football snacks. Popcorn, cakes, and cream biscuits also featured prominently in watch-party menus.

Beverage Preferences Evolve

On the beverage front, consumer preferences showed a shift towards lighter alternatives alongside traditional soft drinks. Iced tea and kombucha recorded the fastest growth, with orders soaring by 147% compared to an average Sunday, highlighting a growing demand for 'better-for-you' options during late-night events.

Peak Hunger Hits in the Second Half

Contrary to expectations that ordering might slow down after kick-off, shopping activity continued to rise through the first half of the match. The biggest surge in orders occurred during the second half, specifically between 1:31 AM and 2:15 AM, reflecting a wave of midnight cravings as the game reached its decisive moments.

This data underscores the significant influence of major sporting events on consumer behavior within India's rapidly expanding quick-commerce market, demonstrating how fans increasingly rely on instant deliveries to fuel their celebrations until the final whistle.
