India's Land Degradation Crisis: Threat to Farming and Food Security

Nearly one-third of India's land, approximately 115-120 million hectares, is now degraded, posing a significant threat to agricultural productivity and national food security. A recent report highlights the urgent need for regenerative farming to reverse this crisis.

A new report, "Reimagining Indian Agriculture: Unlocking the Regenerative Opportunity," reveals a stark reality for India's agricultural future: nearly one-third of the nation's total land area is currently degraded. This alarming figure, estimated at 115-120 million hectares by 2024 according to data from the ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science, poses a severe risk to agricultural productivity, farmer livelihoods, and the country's long-term food security.

The Scale of the Soil Crisis

Soil is the fundamental resource underpinning India's vast farm economy. As soil quality deteriorates, its capacity to sustain stable and productive agriculture diminishes, creating a ripple effect across the nation. The report links this widespread degradation not only to reduced yields but also to increased vulnerability for farmers, compounded by pressures from climate variability and dwindling groundwater resources.

Regenerative Agriculture: A Path Forward

To counteract this escalating crisis, the report strongly advocates for a systemic shift towards regenerative agriculture. This approach moves beyond mere maintenance of farmland, aiming instead to actively rebuild soil health, enhance biodiversity, restore water resources, and improve overall ecosystem functions.

Key practices integral to regenerative farming include:

  • Reduced tillage to minimize soil disturbance.
  • Cover cropping to protect and enrich the soil.
  • Strategic crop rotation to improve nutrient cycling.
  • Agroforestry, integrating trees and shrubs into farming systems.
  • Livestock integration, leveraging animals for soil health and nutrient distribution.

These methods collectively work to increase soil organic matter, optimize nutrient and water cycles, and decrease reliance on synthetic inputs, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional farming.

Challenges and Policy Gaps

Despite the clear benefits, scaling regenerative agriculture across India faces significant hurdles. The report identifies high transition costs, limited access to necessary finance, underdeveloped carbon and ecosystem markets, and inadequate monitoring systems as major barriers. Furthermore, the uncertainty surrounding short-term farm productivity during the transition period deters many farmers from adopting these new practices.

While India has several existing initiatives that align with regenerative principles, such as the National Mission on Natural Farming, the AgriSURE Fund, and the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana, a crucial policy gap remains. The report points out the absence of a nationally accepted definition and a unified framework for regenerative agriculture. It recommends a strategic shift in government support, moving away from input-based subsidies towards incentives that are directly linked to measurable outcomes like improved soil organic carbon levels, water productivity, reduced input intensity, enhanced biodiversity, and stable farmer incomes.
