India's corporate hiring practices are struggling to keep pace with the educational sector's shift towards prioritizing skills over traditional academic credentials. Despite colleges actively preparing students for a skills-first job market, many companies continue to rely on old-school metrics like Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and institutional pedigree.
A recent report by HirePro, an AI-powered recruitment and assessment platform, titled "The State of College Hiring in India 2026," reveals a significant disconnect. Only 21% of corporates have fully embraced skills-first hiring, moving away from conventional qualifications. In contrast, a substantial 51% of organizations still allow CGPA scores to influence their hiring decisions.
The Reality of Skills-First Adoption
The study highlights that skills-first hiring is far from a universal practice across India. While 42% of companies are in a transitional phase, another 21% report that their approach varies considerably across different roles and business units. This indicates that a consistent, enterprise-wide adoption of skills-based hiring is yet to materialize. Furthermore, 9% of employers continue to primarily depend on college pedigree and academic records, with 7% still in the pilot stage of experimenting with skills-first recruitment.
A striking perception gap emerged when comparing the views of colleges and corporates. A remarkable 96% of colleges believe that most corporates have already adopted a "skills-first" approach. This perception stands in stark contrast to the self-reported practices of companies, where the transformation is clearly still underway.
Gen-AI Proficiency: Preferred, Not Yet Required
The integration of Generative AI (Gen-AI) proficiency into hiring also illustrates this evolving landscape. While 85% of corporates express a preference for Gen-AI-ready students, only a small fraction—12%—currently implement it as a hard hiring filter. A larger segment, 44%, classifies Gen-AI proficiency as a "preferred skill." This suggests that students might be overemphasizing Gen-AI readiness as a decisive factor, preparing for a filter that is not yet widely applied.
The report also points to a widening confidence gap, where students' self-assessment of their readiness often differs from corporate evaluations, signaling a persistent misalignment between academic preparation and workplace expectations. Interestingly, demand for Gen-AI skills also varies by role, with nearly 29% of corporates differentiating requirements for tech and non-tech positions, offering non-technical job seekers more time to develop these capabilities.
The findings underscore that while the narrative of a skills-first revolution is strong, the practical implementation within India's corporate sector remains a work in progress, with many organizations still navigating the shift from traditional credentials to modern competencies.
