India's Gen Z Pivots Crypto Investments to Utility Over Memecoins

· · 2 min read

Indian Gen Z investors are increasingly diversifying their crypto portfolios, favoring utility tokens over speculative memecoins. Data shows younger individuals are starting early, with crypto serving as an entry point into broader financial markets.

Gen Z's Evolving Crypto Strategy

India's Gen Z is redefining its approach to cryptocurrency investing, moving beyond highly speculative memecoins towards a more diversified portfolio focused on utility tokens. This shift, highlighted by recent data from crypto exchange WazirX, indicates a growing maturity and strategic mindset among young investors entering the digital asset space.

According to WazirX, Gen Z investors, with a median age of 25, comprised 72% of all new investors on the platform in the first half of 2026. A significant 44.4% of these young individuals began their investment journeys directly through crypto, establishing digital assets as a primary gateway into financial markets rather than a secondary move after traditional investments.

Diversified Holdings and Early Entry

Despite the common association of Gen Z with high-risk, trend-driven investments, the data reveals a different picture. Memecoins account for a relatively small 16% of their crypto holdings. The majority, 59%, is allocated to utility-focused categories such as Decentralized Finance (DeFi), Layer-2 ecosystems, and payment tokens. Established 'blue-chip' cryptocurrencies make up another 25% of their portfolios.

Nischal Shetty, Founder of WazirX, emphasized this trend: "Gen Z is proving that wealth creation isn't about where you come from or how much you start with, but finding the right opportunities, doing your research, and starting early. Young Indians were investing in crypto earlier, but they're doing so with discipline, curiosity, and a long-term mindset now."

This generation also demonstrates a willingness to start investing early, without waiting to accumulate substantial wealth. Crypto is increasingly viewed as an integral component of a broader, long-term wealth-building strategy.

Broader Participation and Market Resilience

The embrace of digital assets is also spreading geographically. Nearly 80% of WazirX's Gen Z users originate from outside India's top 10 metropolitan cities, signaling a significant expansion of digital asset investing into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. This broadens the demographic and economic reach of the crypto market in India.

Furthermore, Gen Z investors show remarkable resilience during market volatility. Data indicates that 52.8% continue to buy during mild market corrections, and 43.7% maintain their buying activity even on the worst trading days. Their average investment size remains consistent during major market declines, suggesting a disciplined, long-term perspective rather than panic selling.

The findings collectively paint a picture of a young, engaged investor base that is not only comfortable with digital assets but also demonstrates a strategic approach to portfolio diversification, research-driven decisions, and a commitment to sustained participation in the market.
