Indians Embrace Quick Commerce for Last-Minute Raksha Bandhan Gifts

· · 2 min read

Indian consumers increasingly relied on quick commerce platforms for Raksha Bandhan shopping, buying everything from traditional rakhis to smartphones and festive wear at the last minute. This trend highlights a significant shift towards convenience in festival gifting.

Quick Commerce Transforms Festive Gifting

Raksha Bandhan shopping patterns have undergone a dramatic transformation, with Indian consumers increasingly turning to quick commerce platforms for their last-minute needs. Gone are the days of weeks-long preparations; this year, on-demand delivery services became the go-to for everything from traditional rakhis and sweets to high-value items like smartphones and festive outfits.

Data from Flipkart Minutes, a prominent quick commerce platform, revealed a threefold jump in Raksha Bandhan orders this season. Notably, Gen Z accounted for over 40% of these shoppers, underscoring a broader trend of younger consumers embracing rapid delivery not just for daily essentials but also for major festival purchases, especially when time is of the essence.

Beyond Traditional Gifts: Smartphones, Gold & Fashion

While rakhis remained the top draw, shopping baskets reflected a diverse range of items, indicating a shift beyond conventional presents. Mobile handsets, true wireless earbuds, gold coin bars, and smartwatches emerged as popular gift choices. In addition to these modern gifts, precious earrings, gold and silver coins, and pooja thali sets also saw strong demand, blending traditional purchases with aspirational gifting.

The platform observed significant growth in specific categories: Rakhi and Fashion Maang Tikka recorded exponential growth rates of 20X and 4X respectively. The trend towards personalization was also evident, with accessories like fashion brooches, mobile tripods, and watch combos seeing 3.5X growth, alongside increased searches for customized gift hampers.

Pan-India Adoption and Peak Shopping Hours

The surge in quick commerce adoption wasn't confined to India's largest cities. Alongside metros such as Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata, shoppers in smaller markets like Aurangabad, Madurai, and Nawada also drove festive purchases, signaling the widespread embrace of rapid delivery services across the country.

The clearest trend was the rise of last-minute buying. Flipkart Minutes reported selling over 2,000 rakhis every minute during the festive rush. Shopping activity peaked between 4 pm and 10 pm, with mobile phones recording the highest gifting orders within a single hour, highlighting consumers' growing reliance on swift delivery for time-sensitive occasions. Festive fashion also benefited, with men's kurta orders rising 87% year-on-year, positioning quick commerce as a crucial fallback for assembling both gifts and wardrobes at the eleventh hour.
