An Indian-flagged vessel, the MT Jalveer, experienced a significant fire in its engine room while operating off the coast of Oman. The incident occurred near Shinas port, prompting an emergency distress call from the crew.
During the SOS call, a crew member confirmed to port authorities that despite the blaze, all personnel on board were safe and the situation was under control. Coordinates for the vessel were also relayed. The Indian Embassy in Oman acknowledged the incident, stating it was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities for further details. The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) identified the ship as MT Jalveer and shared visuals related to the event.
Escalating Maritime Incidents in the Region
This incident involving the MT Jalveer is the third reported this week concerning vessels with Indian crew members operating in the vicinity of Oman.
Previous Attacks
- Palau-flagged tanker Settebello: Earlier this week, this tanker was struck in the Gulf of Oman. A subsequent fire resulted in the deaths of three Indian seafarers, with 21 others rescued. The United States military later claimed responsibility for a “precision” strike on the vessel, alleging it had not complied with instructions and was transporting Iranian oil. Footage of the strike was also released by the U.S. military.
- MT Marivex: Another Palau-flagged oil tanker, the MT Marivex, carrying 24 Indian crew members, was hit off the Omani coast near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Its crew was evacuated following a fire onboard.
Reports suggested approximately 20 crew members were on the MT Jalveer, although an official confirmation of the exact number has not yet been released.
