Indian travelers are demonstrating remarkable resilience and adaptability as they plan their summer 2026 getaways, navigating a complex landscape of fluctuating airfares, rising costs, and global uncertainties. According to Skyscanner's Smarter Summer Report, nearly nine out of ten Indians are either planning or have already booked their holidays, with a significant 77% expressing confidence in traveling within the next three months.
New Priorities for Summer Travel
The report highlights several key factors influencing how Indians approach their summer travel decisions:
- Nearly half (48%) are actively factoring in volatile flight prices.
- A substantial 45% are scrutinizing total trip costs more carefully than before.
- Travel advisories are impacting the plans of 34% of travelers.
- Operational disruptions, such as airport closures, are affecting 32% of itineraries.
Amid these challenges, a growing trend towards savvier planning is emerging. A majority of travelers (58%) believe July offers more affordable flights compared to August, indicating a strategic approach to securing better value. This adaptability extends to destination choices, with 30% of travelers opting to switch locations rather than cancel their trips entirely.
The Rise of Offbeat Destinations
Neel Ghose, Travel and Destinations Expert at Skyscanner India, notes a distinct shift in traveler mindset. "Travelers are not stepping back; they are adapting within constraints," Ghose explains. "Instead of cancelling, they are staying flexible on where they go, with many willing to switch destinations in response to changing costs and conditions." This has led to a noticeable move from popular hotspots to alternative, lesser-known locales.
This preference for the unconventional is clear: 81% of surveyed Indians are open to exploring offbeat destinations, and 60% are actively seeking quieter, less crowded places. Furthermore, a strong ethical consideration is at play, with nine in ten travelers emphasizing that their holiday spending should benefit local communities and small businesses.
Aviral Gupta, CEO of Zostel and Zo World, confirms this trend from ground-level observations. "Offbeat destinations across our network grew 88% year-on-year," Gupta states, adding that 60% of these guests were first-time travelers, many hailing from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Zostel even strategically holds back a portion of its bookings to cater to this growing segment of last-minute planners.
Addressing Overtourism
A significant concern highlighted by Zostel is the issue of overtourism in certain regions of India. Gupta points out that when destinations become excessively popular on social media, Zostel actively works to redirect travelers towards alternative locations. This deliberate strategy aims to protect both the integrity of the destination and the livelihoods of local communities, preventing the displacement of residents due to surging tourist footfall.
