The Indian Rupee commenced trading today at 94.30 against the US dollar, marking a significant appreciation of 67 paise. This surge represents the currency's strongest performance in two months, driven by substantial capital inflows facilitated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
RBI Measures Bolster Reserves with $136 Billion
The impressive gain in the Rupee's value comes after the Reserve Bank of India's strategic capital-raising initiatives successfully attracted a massive $136 billion. This figure significantly surpassed the central bank's initial projection of $80 billion, providing a robust boost to India's foreign exchange reserves and bolstering confidence in the national currency.
According to the RBI's announcement late on Wednesday, approximately $127 billion was collected through a specialized deposit program targeting overseas citizens. An additional $9.15 billion flowed in from two other distinct programs, bringing the total fresh capital injection to $136 billion.
Expert Outlook and Market Sentiment
Analysts are optimistic about the Rupee's newfound strength. Michael Wan, a senior currency analyst at MUFG Bank Ltd, highlighted that the RBI's foreign exchange measures have considerably reduced the risk of sharp depreciation for the Rupee. He noted that these strong inflows furnish the central bank with significantly enhanced resources to defend the currency against potential weaknesses.
The currency pair was observed trading below its 100-day moving average, a technical indicator often suggesting further potential for gains. This positive sentiment is further supported by the Rupee's recent performance, having been the second-best performing currency across Asia over the past month. Shinhan Bank has even suggested that the Rupee could strengthen further, potentially reaching around 93.50 against the US dollar in the coming days.
