Indian Railways Implements New Token System for Tatkal Tickets From August 1, 2026

· · 3 min read

Indian Railways is introducing a new token-based system for Tatkal ticket bookings at reservation counters, effective August 1, 2026. This change aims to reduce waiting times, manage crowds, and allow passengers to complete their bookings in a single visit.

Indian Railways is set to transform the process of booking Tatkal tickets at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters with a new token-based system, effective August 1, 2026. This significant update is designed to streamline the booking experience, reduce long queues, and prevent overcrowding at railway stations.

Why the Change? Enhancing Efficiency and Transparency

The primary goal behind this new system is to make offline Tatkal bookings smoother and more transparent. By implementing a structured token distribution, Indian Railways aims to eliminate the need for passengers to stand in line multiple times, ultimately improving crowd management and reducing overall waiting times.

How the New Token System Works

Under the revised guidelines, passengers wishing to book Tatkal tickets offline will follow a specific process:

  • Token Collection: Visit the designated reservation counter during the prescribed token distribution window.
  • Waiting Period: Collect a token and wait for your unique token number to be announced.
  • Booking Completion: Once your number is called, proceed to submit your reservation form, complete the payment using accepted methods (cash, UPI, card), and receive your booked Tatkal ticket.

Token Distribution Timings

Separate windows and timings have been set for AC and non-AC Tatkal bookings, aligning with existing booking schedules:

  • AC Tatkal: Tokens distributed from 8:30 am to 9:00 am; bookings commence at 10:00 am.
  • Non-AC Tatkal: Tokens distributed from 9:30 am to 10:00 am; bookings commence at 11:00 am.

Priority and Allocation of Tokens

To ensure fair access, the system introduces a priority structure for token holders:

  • Category A: These tokens are reserved for individuals booking tickets for themselves or their immediate family members, receiving top priority. Each window will initially issue 10 tokens for AC classes and 15 for non-AC classes under this category.
  • Category B: Issued for all other general passengers or commercial requests, these tokens are processed after all Category A requests have been fulfilled.

Should seats remain available after all token holders have been served, counters will then open for walk-in passengers on a first-come, first-served basis.

Important Rules and Required Documents

Passengers must be aware of key rules to ensure a smooth booking process:

  • Non-Transferable Tokens: Tokens are strictly non-transferable and are tied to the individual who collected them.
  • Valid ID: A valid government-issued photo identity card, such as an Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, or PAN card, is mandatory for completing the booking.
  • OTP Authentication: Direct OTP authentication will be used to match the traveler's ID, a measure to prevent fraudulent bookings.

Online Bookings Remain Unchanged

It is important to note that this new token-based system applies exclusively to offline Tatkal bookings made at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Online Tatkal bookings, facilitated through the IRCTC app and the Rail Connect app, will continue to operate without any changes to their existing process.
