Commercial and military aviation demands extraordinary skill, especially when unexpected crises unfold thousands of feet above the ground. Over the years, several Indian pilots have faced such high-pressure emergencies, making critical decisions that ultimately saved hundreds of lives.
These incidents, ranging from engine failures to direct threats in the cockpit, underscore the immense responsibility and quick thinking required to navigate an aircraft safely back to earth.
Captain Smit Machchhar: Cockpit Attack on Flydubai Flight
On September 30, 2026, Captain Smit Machchhar was piloting Flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a co-pilot launched an attack inside the cockpit. The Boeing 737 experienced a rapid descent, plunging over 14,000 feet in approximately 30 seconds.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to enter and subdue the attacker. Two reserve Flydubai pilots, traveling as passengers, then took control of the aircraft, executing a safe landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. More than 170 people were on board.
Captain Monica Khanna: SpiceJet Engine Fire
In June 2022, Captain Monica Khanna was at the controls of a SpiceJet flight from Patna to Delhi when the aircraft's left engine caught fire shortly after takeoff. The crew suspected a bird strike, which was later confirmed by an inspection revealing damage to three fan blades.
Khanna swiftly shut down the affected engine and skillfully returned the Boeing 737 to Patna, operating on a single engine. All 185 passengers were safely evacuated without any injuries.
Co-Pilot Maitreyee Shitole: Hydraulic Failure
October 2024 saw co-pilot Maitreyee Shrikrishna Shitole and pilot Iqrom Rifadly Fahmi Zainal respond to a critical hydraulic problem on Air India Express Flight IX613, en route from Tiruchirappalli to Sharjah. The issue arose shortly after takeoff with 141 passengers aboard.
Unable to land immediately, the crew circled over Tiruchirappalli for more than two hours to reduce the aircraft's fuel load. This crucial maneuver ensured a safer landing attempt. The Boeing 737 eventually landed safely at Tiruchirappalli airport.
Captain Amit Kumar: Double Engine Failure
In May 2016, Captain Amit Kumar was piloting a Beech King Air C-90A air ambulance from Patna to Delhi when both of its engines failed sequentially. With the aircraft plummeting below 3,000 feet over Delhi's densely populated Najafgarh area, Kumar faced a harrowing decision.
With mere seconds to decide, he veered the aircraft towards an open field in Kair village, away from residential areas. The aircraft crash-landed, but remarkably, everyone on board survived thanks to his decisive action.
Wing Commander Saurabh Sharma: IAF Engine Malfunction
On April 1, 2014, Wing Commander Saurabh Sharma was flying an Indian Air Force AN-32 transport aircraft carrying 35 passengers and five crew members towards Kargil. During its descent through treacherous mountainous terrain, the aircraft developed a critical problem with its right engine.
Sharma quickly shut down the failing engine and expertly managed the aircraft for a single-engine landing at Kargil's challenging high-altitude airfield. All 40 individuals aboard survived, and Sharma was later awarded the Vayu Sena Medal for his gallantry.
These accounts stand as powerful testaments to the extraordinary professionalism, courage, and composure of Indian pilots who, when faced with dire circumstances, consistently put passenger safety above all else.
