The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has once again moved to allay public concerns regarding ethanol-blended petrol, specifically E20 fuel, emphasizing that its mileage performance is contingent on a multitude of factors beyond the fuel itself. The ministry asserted that E20 has undergone comprehensive testing and validation.
Mileage Factors Beyond Fuel
In a recent statement, the MoPNG highlighted that vehicle mileage is influenced by several variables. "Mileage depends on more than fuel alone. Driving habits, traffic conditions, vehicle maintenance, correct tyre pressure, and even air conditioning usage all play a significant role," the ministry clarified. This response addresses persistent public apprehension that higher ethanol blends could adversely affect vehicle fuel economy.
The ministry reiterated that E20 fuel has been subjected to extensive testing and validation processes. Its statement concluded with a definitive, "E20: Tested. Validated."
Rigorous Testing and Compatibility
Further elaborating on the testing procedures, the MoPNG confirmed that E20 has been evaluated across crucial vehicle parameters. These include:
- Engine durability
- Drivability
- Startability
- Material compatibility (for fuel system components)
- Corrosion resistance
These rigorous assessments, according to the ministry, aim to foster confidence in E20's compatibility and overall vehicle performance. The government views these evaluations as vital for empowering consumers to make informed choices as India transitions towards cleaner mobility solutions.
Acknowledged Marginal Impact on Older Vehicles
Despite the strong defense, the government had previously acknowledged a marginal reduction in fuel economy for specific vehicles. Last month, Suresh Gopi, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated in the Rajya Sabha that "Any reduction in fuel economy in certain E10-designed vehicles is generally marginal (around 3–5%)." This impact primarily affects vehicles designed to run on E10 petrol before 2023.
Both the government and automobile manufacturers have consistently affirmed that widespread E20-related engine damage has not been observed in testing. They maintain that E20 contributes to cleaner and more efficient engine operation, improving emissions performance without causing abnormal wear or compatibility issues with vehicle fuel systems and materials.
