Indian stock markets experienced a robust rally on Tuesday, with both the Sensex and Nifty benchmark indices closing over 1% higher. This surge translated into a substantial increase in investor wealth on the BSE, which rose by ₹4.62 lakh crore, bringing the total market capitalization to ₹470.07 lakh crore.
Key Drivers Behind the Market Uplift
Several factors contributed to today's positive market sentiment:
- FM's Tax Comments: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's statement that the government is open to discussions regarding the removal of Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax and a debate on Securities Transaction Tax (STT) provided a significant boost. The Sensex extended its gains in afternoon trade following these remarks.
- IT Sector Rally: Technology stocks led the charge, with the BSE IT index climbing 1340 points. HCL Technologies soared over 8%, while other major IT players like TCS, Tech Mahindra, and Infosys also saw gains of up to 6%.
- Falling Volatility: The India VIX, a key measure of market volatility, dropped by 7.41%, indicating reduced investor apprehension.
- Crude Oil Price Drop: Brent crude prices fell below $106 a barrel, snapping a three-day gaining streak. Lower crude prices are generally favorable for import-dependent economies like India.
- IMF's Growth Forecast: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised India's growth forecast for the financial year 2026-27 to 7% from an earlier estimate of 6.4%. This improved outlook reflects confidence in India's domestic demand and strong services activity.
Market Performance and Top Movers
The Sensex closed 1109 points higher at 73,033, while the Nifty rose 358 points to 22,721. Beyond the IT sector, other notable gainers included HUL, Trent, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Titan Company, M&M, and BEL, which saw increases of up to 2.94%.
Conversely, shares of Kotak Bank, Eternal, and Maruti Suzuki were among the few Sensex constituents that experienced declines, falling by up to 0.90%.
Analyst Outlook
Market analysts offered cautious optimism. Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research at Religare Broking, noted that Nifty's recovery above 22,700 offers near-term relief, but resistance levels around 22,900 to 23,200 remain. He advised a cautious approach due to persistent macroeconomic uncertainties. Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities highlighted Nifty's range-bound movement and suggested a decisive move above 22,800 could confirm a bottom reversal. Nandish Shah, also from HDFC Securities, pointed to Nifty's close above the 13-day DEMA as an early sign of improved short-term momentum, with support shifting higher to 22,580.
Despite the sharp rebound, persistent macroeconomic uncertainties warrant a cautious approach, with a preference for selective stock-specific opportunities and disciplined risk management. — Ajit Mishra, SVP – Research, Religare Broking
