Indian Markets Face Muted Start on July 22 Amid Geopolitical Tensions, Rising Crude

· · 3 min read

Indian equity markets are poised for a cautious opening on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, as GIFT Nifty futures indicate a negative start. Geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea and elevated crude oil prices are tempering investor sentiment.

Indian benchmark indices, Nifty and Sensex, are expected to open flat to negative on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, according to early indicators. GIFT Nifty futures on the NSE International Exchange were down 61.10 points, or 0.25 percent, at 24,119.50, signaling a muted start for domestic trading.

Key Market Drivers

Several factors are influencing market sentiment. Brent crude oil prices nudged higher to $91.55 a barrel after two Saudi oil tankers reversed course in the Red Sea due to threats from Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis. This geopolitical tension in West Asia, coupled with rising crude oil prices, a weakening rupee, and persistent selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), is expected to keep Indian equities range-bound.

Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, noted, "Earnings season is expected to drive stock-specific action, [while] investor sentiment shall be influenced by developments in West Asia and the crude oil prices."

Global Cues and FII/DII Activity

Globally, markets presented a mixed picture. While US main indices closed higher on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite all posting gains, Asian markets showed divergence. KOSPI soared nearly 6 percent, and Nikkei jumped 2 percent, but the Hang Seng index was down 1 percent.

Provisional data from the NSE revealed that FPIs were net sellers of domestic stocks, offloading Rs 656.88 crore on Tuesday. Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were net buyers, injecting Rs 1,650.16 crore into Indian equities.

Nifty50 and Sensex Outlook

Analysts suggest a period of consolidation for the broader market.

  • Nifty50: "The market continues to form indecisive candlestick patterns, suggesting that the current range could break in either direction," said Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities. A meaningful breakout would be confirmed only if Nifty surpasses 24,500 or slips below 24,000 on a closing basis. Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, projects a potential move towards 24,400, with immediate support at 24,150. A breach below this could see the index drop to 23,950.
  • Sensex: Sachin Gupta, VP of Technical Research at Choice Equity Broking, noted that Sensex continues to trade within a broader consolidation range. Immediate support is identified between 77,100–77,200, while resistance is seen around 77,800–77,900.

India VIX, a measure of market volatility, declined 2.93 percent to 12.60, indicating subdued volatility and a cautious approach from traders, according to Dhupesh Dhameja, Derivatives Research Analyst at SAMCO Securities.

Nifty Bank Analysis

The Nifty Bank index remains above its key short-term and medium-term moving averages, suggesting a constructive broader trend. However, momentum indicators are largely neutral, pointing towards a lack of strong directional conviction and range-bound movement in the near term.

Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, places immediate resistance for Bank Nifty in the 58,300-58,400 zone, with a sustained move above potentially leading to 58,800. On the downside, immediate support is found in the 57,500-57,400 zone. Bajaj Broking Research added that a move above the June high of 58,700 would confirm a breakout towards 59,300 and eventually 60,000 levels.
