Indian Markets Face Muted Start; GIFT Nifty Down 53 Points, Key Levels to Watch

· · 4 min read

Indian equities anticipate a cautious Tuesday opening as GIFT Nifty futures indicate a 53-point dip. Global factors like mixed Wall Street performance and fluctuating oil prices are influencing investor sentiment, with key support and resistance levels in focus.

Indian stock markets are poised for a subdued start to trading on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. This comes as GIFT Nifty futures on the NSE International Exchange were trading down by 53 points, or 0.22 percent, at 23,957, signaling a cautious mood among investors.

Global Market Overview and Influencing Factors

Wall Street concluded Monday's session with mixed results as investors weighed upcoming guidance from major technology firms against concerns that persistent high oil prices might prompt the US Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. The S&P 500 saw a marginal gain of 0.02 percent, closing at 7,413.18, while the Nasdaq declined 0.18 percent to 24,932.08. Conversely, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.51 percent, reaching 52,210.08.

Domestically, Indian markets are expected to navigate a delicate balance between an improving geopolitical landscape and renewed volatility in global tech stocks. Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, noted that a temporary de-escalation in West Asia and a subsequent fall in crude oil prices have offered some short-term relief. He emphasized that geopolitical developments and crude oil price movements would be crucial drivers in the near term, alongside the accelerating earnings season which will dictate stock-specific actions.

Asian Markets, Crude Oil, and Currency

Asian markets generally tumbled in early trade, with Japan's Nikkei dropping over 4 percent and South Korea's KOSPI down by a percent. Hong Kong's Hang Seng, however, edged higher. The US dollar maintained a one-month high as traders considered a slight possibility of a Fed rate hike, with the dollar index edging up 0.03 percent to 101.55. In the commodities market, Brent crude futures fell 1 percent to $88 a barrel, and US West Texas Intermediate crude dropped 1.1 percent to $82.

Investor sentiment found some improvement following the sharp decline in crude oil prices, attributed to reports of easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking, advised a stock-specific approach, favoring stronger stocks across sectors while maintaining disciplined risk management.

FII-DII Flows and Market Technicals

Provisional data from the NSE showed Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) were net sellers of domestic stocks on Monday, offloading shares worth Rs 1,688.23 crore. Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) emerged as net buyers, injecting Rs 2,329.14 crore into Indian equities.

Nifty50, Sensex & India VIX Outlook

The market maintained positive momentum on Monday, forming a bullish candle on daily charts. Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities, stated that as long as the market trades above 23,880/76,500, the pullback is likely to continue. He projected a potential retest of the 20-day SMA or 24,100-24,150/77,000-77,300 levels. A breach below 23,880/76,500 could accelerate selling pressure, potentially pushing the market to 23,800-23,725/76,200-76,000.

Hitesh Tailor, Technical Research Analyst at Choice Equity Broking, noted that the Sensex continues to trade below its 100-Day and 200-Day EMAs, indicating that the broader trend has yet to turn decisively positive. Sustaining above the 76,200–76,500 support zone is crucial for the ongoing recovery, with 77,200–77,500 acting as immediate resistance.

Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, highlighted Nifty's sharp rebound from near 23,600 support and its position on the verge of breaking above immediate resistance at 24,000-24,100. Sustaining above 24,100 could open the path to 24,500 in the near term, with immediate support at 23,800.

India VIX sharply declined by 9.76 percent to 12.66, signaling easing volatility and improved market sentiment, according to Dhupesh Dhameja, Derivatives Research Analyst at SAMCO Securities, who also noted constructive option chain positioning.

Nifty Bank Outlook

The Nifty Bank index formed a Doji candle on the daily chart, reflecting indecisiveness. Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, observed that the index remains within a defined range, lacking strong directional momentum. The 57,500-57,600 zone is a key hurdle; a decisive move above it could trigger buying towards 58,200. The 100-day EMA zone of 56,700-56,600 serves as a crucial support area.

Bajaj Broking Research added that Nifty Bank's immediate hurdle is at 57,500, with the upper band of recent consolidation around 58,500-58,700 acting as stiff resistance. Key support is placed at 56,500-56,000. A breach below this could accelerate decline towards 55,000. The shallow retracement over four weeks suggests an overall positive bias and higher base formation in the current corrective decline.
