Indian equity benchmark indices are expected to open on a cautious note this Monday, July 20, 2026. GIFT Nifty Futures on the NSE International Exchange were down by 36.70 points, or 0.15 percent, at 24,285, signaling a muted start for the domestic market.
Global Cues and Geopolitical Impact
The global market sentiment remains risk-off following Wall Street's extended decline on Friday. A pullback in stocks associated with the AI boom morphed into broader cautiousness. Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are a significant concern, pushing Brent crude prices above $90 a barrel for the first time in over a month, as the US military continued attacks against Iran.
Asian share markets also showed hesitation on Monday, with the conflict in the Gulf lifting oil prices and fueling inflation fears. The US dollar index rose slightly to 100.84, while non-interest-paying gold fell 0.6 percent to $3,993 an ounce under pressure from rising yields.
Expert Outlook and Investor Flows
Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, anticipates a gradual uptrend for Indian equities next week, driven by a strong earnings season. Investor focus will remain on corporate commentary and earnings reports from index heavyweights.
Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking, noted that elevated geopolitical uncertainty, volatile crude oil prices, and evolving global monetary policy expectations are likely to keep market volatility high in the near term. However, the medium-term outlook remains positive, suggesting opportunities to accumulate quality stocks on dips.
Provisional data from NSE indicated that Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) were net sellers of domestic stocks worth Rs 376.41 crore on Friday. Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) were net buyers, injecting Rs 1,017.89 crore into Indian equities. Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, highlighted a positive shift in FPI stance towards India since early July, attributing it to improving macros and rupee stability.
