Indian Markets Extend Fifth Day Loss Amid Geopolitical Tensions & Rising Crude Prices

· · 3 min read

Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty closed lower for the fifth consecutive session on Friday. Persistent geopolitical tensions, elevated crude oil prices, and weak corporate earnings weighed heavily on investor sentiment.

Indian equity benchmarks, the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, extended their losing streak to a fifth consecutive day on Friday. Investor sentiment remained subdued amidst a confluence of factors, including ongoing geopolitical tensions, a surge in Brent crude oil prices above $100 per barrel, and disappointing quarterly earnings from several large-cap companies.

The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 331.62 points, or 0.43 percent, to settle at 76,059.77. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty50 index fell 102.15 points, or 0.43 percent, closing at 23,767.45. This consistent downturn underscores a cautious trend observed across the market.

Key Drags on the Market

Several prominent stocks acted as significant drags on the Sensex. These included Bharti Airtel Ltd, HDFC Bank Ltd, Bajaj Finance Ltd, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M), Infosys Ltd, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, Asian Paints Ltd, and Tata Steel Ltd. Their poor performance contributed substantially to the overall market decline.

Sectoral Performance

Sectoral participation was predominantly negative, with auto, metal, and energy stocks emerging as the worst performers. These sectors bore the brunt of the adverse market conditions. However, the IT and banking indices managed to close marginally in the green, offering a slight counterpoint amidst heightened market volatility. The broader market also experienced choppy trading, with the Nifty Smallcap100 index declining 0.10 percent and the Nifty Midcap100 index slipping 0.32 percent.

Analyst Insights and Market Outlook

Analysts point to a number of concerns impacting investor confidence. Ajit Mishra, SVP (Research) at Religare Broking, highlighted the surge in Brent crude prices following fresh escalation in the Middle East, reviving inflation concerns and their potential impact on the domestic economy. He also cited disappointing quarterly earnings and continued weakness in the rupee as contributing factors to cautious market sentiment.

Ankur Punj, MD & Business Head at Equirus Wealth, noted that while late buying in select banking and IT stocks helped pare early losses, the overall downward trend persisted. He added that renewed selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) and the depreciating local currency remain key concerns for investors.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, advised a long-term perspective. He stated that until oil prices moderate and geopolitical risks subside, India's market re-rating is likely to be gradual. Nair reinforced the case for staying invested and accumulating quality businesses rather than remaining on the sidelines during this period of uncertainty.

Nifty Technical Outlook

From a technical standpoint, Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, outlined critical support and resistance levels for the Nifty50. He identified immediate support at 23,600, warning that a fall below this level could trigger a severe correction as investors might exit, increasing downside risk. On the upside, 24,000 is seen as a key resistance level. De suggested that the broader trend is likely to remain weak unless the Nifty reclaims the 24,000 mark.
