Indian equity benchmark indices are poised for a cautious and potentially negative start on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. GIFT Nifty futures, traded on the NSE International Exchange, indicated a weaker opening, falling 114 points, or 0.47 percent, to 24,145.50.
The prevailing sentiment is influenced by a combination of global and domestic factors, including escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, persistently high crude oil prices, continued selling by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), and a weakening Indian rupee. This confluence of headwinds has fostered a risk-off mood among investors.
Global Market Cues
US stocks closed lower on Monday as investors monitored developments regarding Middle East de-escalation efforts and awaited earnings reports from major technology companies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.59 percent, the S&P 500 lost 0.19 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.05 percent.
In contrast, Asian markets showed a mixed performance on Tuesday. South Korea's KOSPI surged over 3 percent, and Japan's Nikkei was up a percent, driven by hopes of Middle East mediation pushing oil prices away from recent highs. However, Hong Kong's Hang Seng edged lower.
Brent crude futures eased 0.38 percent to $88.88 per barrel in early trading, while the US dollar hovered near a one-week high. Gold prices maintained their position above the $4,000 per ounce mark.
Investor Sentiment and FII-DII Flows
Investor sentiment remains subdued following disappointing quarterly earnings from some major private banks, which triggered a sharp sell-off in heavyweight stocks. According to Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking, a cautious 'buy-on-dips' approach is recommended, focusing on relatively stronger stocks while maintaining disciplined risk management.
Provisional data from the NSE revealed that Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) were net sellers of domestic stocks worth Rs 1,121.04 crore on Monday. Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) showed buying interest, acquiring Indian equities worth Rs 1,312.03 crore on a net basis.
Nifty50 and Sensex Technical Outlook
Analysts suggest that the market's trading range has narrowed, with a decisive breakout still pending. Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities, highlighted key levels to watch: 24,000/76,800 on the downside and 24,350/78,300 on the upside for Nifty50 and Sensex, respectively. A close below the downside levels could lead to further declines towards 23,800/76,200, while a sustained move above the upside levels might pave the way for a retest of 24,500/78,700.
Sachin Gupta, VP of Technical Research at Choice Equity Broking, noted that Sensex is in a consolidation phase. Immediate support is seen at 76,900–77,000, with a break potentially extending the decline to 76,500. Resistance is around 78,400–78,500, a decisive move above which could revive bullish momentum.
For Nifty50, Osho Krishan, Chief Manager - Technical & Derivative Research at Angel One, indicated that 24,150-24,000 is likely to cushion any near-term dips. On the upside, 24,350-24,500 is identified as the next potential resistance zone.
Nifty Bank Analysis
The Nifty Bank index formed a small bullish candle with wicks, signaling intraday indecision but managing to hold above its 20-day EMA, thus keeping its short-term bullish trend intact. Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, placed immediate resistance for Bank Nifty in the 58,300-58,400 zone, with potential for further extension towards 58,800 and 59,200 if this zone is breached. Immediate support is at 57,600-57,500.
Vatsal Bhuva, Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, added that the 57,500-57,350 zone, coinciding with the 200-SMA on the hourly chart and the 200-DMA, is expected to provide strong support. The overall trend for Bank Nifty remains positive, advocating a buy-on-dips strategy with 58,500 as a key resistance level.
