Indian equity markets staged a recovery on Wednesday, snapping a two-session losing streak as benchmark indices closed with modest gains. The 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 332.63 points, or 0.45 percent, to settle at 74,336.45. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 index rose 99 points, or 0.43 percent, to end the day at 23,217.60.
The upward movement occurred amidst cautious trading, with investors keenly anticipating the outcome of the US Federal Reserve's policy meeting. This crucial decision is expected to provide significant cues for global market direction.
Sectoral Performance and Top Gainers
Sectoral participation was mixed throughout the trading session. Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), realty, and banking sectors emerged as key gainers, contributing positively to the indices' rebound. Conversely, the Information Technology (IT) and pharmaceutical sectors concluded the day in negative territory, experiencing some profit booking after recent outperformance.
Among the major Nifty components, shares of HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd, SBI Life Insurance Company Ltd, State Bank of India (SBI), ITC Ltd, and Nestle India Ltd saw significant advances, climbing up to 2.73 percent.
However, the broader market painted a slightly different picture. The Nifty Midcap100 index registered a marginal decline of 0.01 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap index fell 0.18 percent, indicating a more selective rally focused on large-cap stocks.
Analyst Insights on Market Dynamics
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, noted that "Indian equities advanced in tandem with Asian markets as easing crude oil prices and a largely priced-in US Fed rate hike improved investor sentiment." He added that a moderation in Japanese bond yields also supported risk appetite across Asia. Domestically, large-cap stocks led the charge, particularly in banking, FMCG, and automobile sectors, while IT saw selective profit booking. Nair emphasized that investors are now awaiting the Fed Chair's commentary for insights into the future rate trajectory, which will influence global liquidity and capital flows.
Ajit Mishra, SVP Research at Religare Broking, commented, "Markets staged a recovery on Wednesday following the recent sharp sell-off, gaining nearly half a percent and providing some respite from the prevailing weakness." Mishra highlighted that the rebound was supported by buying in select heavyweight stocks, but gains remained volatile due to elevated crude prices, global uncertainty, and caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision. Brent crude remained near $108 per barrel, and the rupee stayed under pressure near Rs 95.95 per dollar, with persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) selling also weighing on sentiment.
Nifty Technical Outlook
From a technical perspective, Vinod Nair observed that "Nifty's recovery above 23,200 level provides some near-term relief. However, the broader structure remains weak." He identified immediate resistance for the index around 23,400–23,600, with 23,000–23,100 serving as a crucial support zone. A sustained move above 23,600 would be necessary to signal a meaningful improvement in momentum. Given the prevailing uncertainties, Nair recommended a cautious, hedged approach with selective exposure.
