Indian Appliances Face Up to 8% Price Hike Starting October 1

· · 3 min read

Major home appliances, including air conditioners, LED TVs, and washing machines, are set to become 3-8% more expensive across India from October 1. This marks the industry's third price increase this year, driven by soaring raw material and freight costs.

Appliance Costs Set to Rise Ahead of Festive Season

Indian consumers are bracing for higher prices on essential home appliances as manufacturers prepare to implement increases of up to 8% starting October 1. This adjustment, affecting products like air conditioners, LED televisions, and washing machines, represents the third round of price hikes for the industry in 2026.

Key Factors Driving Price Increases

The primary catalysts for these escalating costs are significant surges in raw material prices and rising freight charges. Essential commodities such as copper, steel, aluminum, and derivatives of crude oil have seen unavoidable increases. For instance, industry leaders highlight that copper prices alone have climbed dramatically from approximately $8,000-$9,000 per metric ton last year to $14,500.

While air conditioner prices are expected to jump immediately by 5-8%, washing machines, refrigerators, and LED TVs will also see increases of 3-4%. Some manufacturers are still assessing the full impact before finalizing their new rates.

Industry Leaders Confirm Adjustments

Several major market players have already confirmed or implemented price adjustments:

  • Blue Star: Managing Director B Thiagarajan noted that AC and deep freezer prices have climbed 5-8%. He attributed this to global conflicts affecting commodity prices, with overall costs up about 15% compared to last year's festive period. However, GST benefits are expected to reduce the net impact on buyers to around 5%.
  • Godrej Appliance: Kamal Nandi, Business Head and Executive Vice President, stated that a 5-7% hike across categories is "inevitable" due to an 8-10% rise in input costs since the last update.
  • Haier India: President NS Satish outlined plans for a 5% increase on room air conditioners from October 1, alongside a 2-3% hike on LED TVs and washing machines, projecting an overall 15% increase by January.
  • Daikin Airconditioning India: CMD Kanwaljeet Jawa confirmed an 8-10% price raise initiated on September 16, citing a 25-35% rise in copper prices putting companies under "tremendous pressure."
  • Super Plastronics (SPPL): The manufacturer behind Thomson, Kodak, and Blaupunkt televisions in India, aims for a 7% rise on TVs post-October, having already increased other appliance pricing by 4-5%.

Other companies like LG and Bosch Home Comfort (Hitachi) have also reportedly raised AC prices by about 5%, while Panasonic is currently evaluating its position.

Impact on Festive Season Sales

Manufacturers employed pre-buying schemes in August and September, meaning existing channel inventory procured at older rates should help stabilize retail prices through the Diwali festive period. However, the new, higher price tags are expected to take full effect post-festivities.

The extended festive stretch, from Onam through Dussehra and Diwali, typically accounts for a significant 30-40% of annual appliance sales. This puts manufacturers in a delicate position, balancing the need to manage soaring input costs with the imperative to sustain consumer demand during a critical sales window.
