India and UAE Strengthen Bilateral Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The leaders focused on fortifying the India-UAE strategic partnership, exploring expanded cooperation in emerging and critical sectors.
Expanding Cooperation Across Critical Sectors
The extensive talks covered key areas such as defence, artificial intelligence, space, critical minerals, energy, food security, and connectivity. Both nations expressed a desire to elevate their ambitions and shape the next phase of bilateral economic and strategic relations. Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the relationship between India and the UAE has been "transformed over the last few years," with both sides now "raising our ambitions even higher."
Economic Corridors and Major Investments
Discussions also touched upon the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), emphasizing its potential to enhance connectivity and supply-chain links between the participating regions. A significant development noted was the International Holding Company (IHC) of the UAE's commitment of USD 11.5 billion towards an integrated greenfield aluminium project in Odisha, India. This investment is poised to establish Odisha as a global aluminium manufacturing hub.
Furthermore, the leaders explored the potential involvement of L’Imad, the UAE's newest sovereign investment fund, in fostering greater investment and economic collaboration. Opportunities in nuclear energy, technology, and innovation were also on the agenda.
Regional Stability and BRICS Engagement
Amid ongoing uncertainties in West Asia, Prime Minister Modi underscored the broader regional importance of a robust India-UAE relationship. He stated, "At a time of uncertainty in West Asia, a strong India-UAE is a symbol of stability, prosperity and peace." The leaders reiterated the significance of their comprehensive strategic partnership, built on political, cultural, commercial, energy, and people-to-people ties. They acknowledged the constructive participation of the UAE in BRICS during India's chairmanship and committed to continued close collaboration on shared priorities.
