India has achieved a remarkable milestone in its clean energy transition, crossing 300 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity as of July 31, 2026. This significant accomplishment means the nation has already met over 60% of its ambitious target to install 500 GW of clean power capacity by 2030.
Solar Power Leads the Charge
The rapid expansion of solar energy has been the primary driver behind this growth. India's solar capacity has surged from a mere 2.8 GW in 2014 to an impressive 164.59 GW. The fiscal year 2025-26 saw a record addition of non-fossil capacity, spearheaded by 44.6 GW of new solar power installations.
Wind energy has also played a crucial role, with its capacity climbing from 21 GW in 2014 to 58.14 GW. During 2025-26, wind power contributed an additional 6 GW to the nation's clean energy portfolio.
Diversified Non-Fossil Portfolio
Beyond solar and wind, India's non-fossil fuel capacity is diversified. It includes 57.24 GW from hydro power (combining large and small projects), 11.75 GW from bio-power, and 8.78 GW from nuclear energy. Collectively, these non-fossil sources now constitute over 54% of India's total electricity generation capacity, which stands at approximately 552 GW.
This capacity expansion has directly translated into increased output. Renewable energy generation soared from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to a substantial 477.79 billion units in 2025-26, demonstrating a significant shift in the country's power mix.
Boosting Domestic Manufacturing and Future Goals
To support this massive expansion and ensure supply chain independence, India has significantly bolstered its domestic manufacturing infrastructure. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for high-efficiency solar modules has been instrumental, pushing the enlisted capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for Solar PV Modules past the 200 GW mark, a dramatic increase from just 2.3 GW in 2014.
Looking ahead, the government is also pursuing deeper industrial decarbonization through the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This initiative aims to establish India as a global hub for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. However, progress on this particular mission is noted to be slower.
